RE: New Rifle
I'd go with the Remington model 700 you can get the 270 in drop floorplate model or with a detachable magazine and blued or stainless models. Happy shopping.

RE: New Rifle
I have had good luck with rem 700 bdl and Browning Abolts. However many seem to really like the tikkas and savages available for less. I guess my point being you can probaly have your choice and be quite satisfied. The recoil in a 270 is very manageable, as far as bolts I can't honestly say I have noticed that much of a difference with manufacturer, but maybe others here can.

RE: New Rifle
Welcome to the board ALHunter270. The 270 Win is one of my favorite deer cartridge. My preference is the Ruger M-77.I like the "All Weather" model the best. The Remington 700's are nice rifles. Either a BDL or ADL depending on you likes. Savage has some nice rifles at affordable prices.I would recommend staying away from the Remington 710.Not to get another Rem.710 discussion going, but it leaves allot to be desired.

I have 4 Rugers and like them. I have 1 Rem 700 BDL and LOVE it mostly because it has a removable clip.

RE: New Rifle
just my opinion. but you might like the browning. nice looking bolt is slick as snot great accuracy.
alos look into the savages. |
RE: New Rifle
The Browning A-bolt rifles are nice, I have one in a 270WSM. The recoil isn't bad at all. Of course the standard 270 is an option as well. I'd also check out the Tikka Whitetail Hunter line. It receives a lot of positive comments on this and other forums. In the area of "shoots great but don't look too pretty", Savage rifles are also well regarded for their out of the box accuracy. They're likely to be the least expensive of the three choices I've mentioned. Money saved can be put into a nice scope.

RE: New Rifle
Tough question. I've had Winchester Model 70, Remington 700BDL, Ruger77, Husquavarna,Bruno and Parker Hale. The only one I didn't like was the Parker Hale.
Not much help, huh? 270 is a good choice. Shot a Remington 710 and I agree with RR, it left a lot to be desired. Shot a Browning SS with fiber stock and found it kind of blocky. Like the feel of wood. Good luck. |
RE: New Rifle
I have a abolt by browning in a 270, I also have a bad shooting wing (shoulder problem). I have no problem plicking off 20 plus shells with this rifle in a t-shirt.
What does he have or has he shot prior? Is it comfortable? You/He may want to consider a 7mm-08 they are very light in recoil and a great caliber. I assume this is mostly a deer gun? The 7mm-08 kicks less than a 270 and as whitetail/deer gun will be great. Many manufacturers offer this chamber. Others would be a 257 roberts or 260 rem., I have read and heard nothing but positive about these calibers, with recoil being very light and a target shooters dream. The only down fall would be if moose or elk is on the menu they may leave a bit in that department. However for deer they would be just fine. |
RE: New Rifle
ALHunter270
Generally speaking the heavier the rifle the less the recoil will be so the easiest way to reduce recoil is to buy a heavier rifle or add weight to it but this is not ideal for a hunting rifle. Another option as suggested previously would be to buy a 7mm-08 which has less recoil than a 270 & almost equals its performance. Good luck Tumbo |

Winchester M70 featherweight.

RE: New Rifle
I am not sure what your really gaining in the 270WSM? If you want smaller, lighter and short throw...then fine. I don' t really believe the published data put out on the WSM or the likes and even if possible, not with factory ammo and real hunting conditions. So I would lean right now toward the standards, for the same reason as bear72 brought up, ammo selection and price.
The 300WSM I would consider, but not the 270 or 7..at this point. |
