RE: enfield 1905
I'm aware of a 1917 Enfield issued to troops in WW1. It was a .30-06. I believe the British had an Enfield model which predated the US version. That would have been chambered in .303 british caliber.

Thanks, I am the owner of the gun. It has the 1905 on a metal band on the stock and 1905 is written underneath where it says enfield. Thanks for all the info. Keep it coming

RE: enfield 1905
I believe the enfield action is one of the best actions to build a dangerous game rifle off of. Very stout anyway. I think A squared rifles may build /use enfield actions in their rifles. possibly on their .577 tyranasaur.

RE: enfield 1905
knew i read about enfield's somewhere! quoting from a book i recently read....."dangerous game rifles", "the enfield was britains attempt to upgrade in the years before 1914. the action is a mauser 98 with some changes, including the cocking mechanism, the bolt shroud, and the safety. It was originally intended to use a 7mm cartridge,. Britain gave large contracts to remington, wincehster, eddystone to prodce the rifle in .303 british. Winchester went to great lengths to adapt the magazine designed for a rimless 7mm to feed the rimmed .303. and A square does use an enfield in their .577 tyrannosaur! a cartridge that drawfs the .505 gibbs!" "remington spearheaded an efffort to convert the .303 p-14to the .30-06 p-17 and hundreds of thousands of rifles were produce by all 3 companies to supplement the springfield."
hope this helps. |

RE: enfield 1905
Its probably a MK.I SMLE (probably marked 'ShtLE' on the receiver band).
SMLE= Short Magazine Lee Enfield. The 1917s, P14s, etc weren't made until a decade later. knew i read about enfield's somewhere! quoting from a book i recently read....."dangerous game rifles", "the enfield was britains attempt to upgrade in the years before 1914. the action is a mauser 98 with some changes, including the cocking mechanism, the bolt shroud, and the safety. RE: enfield 1905
thanks, for the great info. my gun dont have a clip but i would like to find one. would this old gun be worth any money at all.
|
RE: enfield 1905
Yes, if the stock hasn't been cut down, its probably worth several hundred dollars.

RE: enfield 1905
Are there any other markings on the rifle? All of the rifles on such a rifle do have a meaning and can be used to identify it, regardless of how insignificant they look.

RE: enfield 1905
![]() Above is a pic of an Indian No1MKIII* grenade launching rifle. If yours is a MK I, it should look fairly similar with the biggest exception that yours won't be wrapped with wire or have a large bolt through the stock in front of the receiver. |
RE: enfield 1905
Indian alsoaltered the same rifle adapted to single shots for a Brass .410 issued to jail guards. The caveman wire wrapped fore -end was suposed to prevent splitting and breaking during grenade launching.Harold

It is likely that the one you have dated 1905 is a "Short, Magazine, Lee-Enfiled, or SMLE Rilfe No. 1 Mark III. This rifle has a 10-round, detachable-box magazine, and the bolt locks in the receiver using two lugs about halfway back on the sides of the bolt body. This rifle is also chambered for the .303 British cartridge, and was the British Army's primary battle rifle in WWI. A modifiedversion of the same design, designated Rifle No. 4, was also usedin WWII by the British. The SMLE in its various forms is the BEST combat bolt-action rifle ever issued!! http://www.surplusrifle.com/smle/index.asp The SMLE No. 1 Mark III looks like this: ![]() |
