enfield 1905
 

My cousin has a enfield 1905 that he got from an uncle. He is wondering information about a gun like this. It is an unknown caliber, with a large bolt action.It has several marks and several numbers and letters posted everywhere on it. Anyone with any information about it or how to find outinfo about it give us a shout. I live inSouthern Illinois. Thanks.

I'm aware of a 1917 Enfield issued to troops in WW1. It was a .30-06. I believe the British had an Enfield model which predated the US version. That would have been chambered in .303 british caliber.

Thanks, I am the owner of the gun. It has the 1905 on a metal band on the stock and 1905 is written underneath where it says enfield. Thanks for all the info. Keep it coming

I believe the enfield action is one of the best actions to build a dangerous game rifle off of. Very stout anyway. I think A squared rifles may build /use enfield actions in their rifles. possibly on their .577 tyranasaur.

knew i read about enfield's somewhere! quoting from a book i recently read....."dangerous game rifles", "the enfield was britains attempt to upgrade in the years before 1914. the action is a mauser 98 with some changes, including the cocking mechanism, the bolt shroud, and the safety. It was originally intended to use a 7mm cartridge,. Britain gave large contracts to remington, wincehster, eddystone to prodce the rifle in .303 british. Winchester went to great lengths to adapt the magazine designed for a rimless 7mm to feed the rimmed .303. and A square does use an enfield in their .577 tyrannosaur! a cartridge that drawfs the .505 gibbs!" "remington spearheaded an efffort to convert the .303 p-14to the .30-06 p-17 and hundreds of thousands of rifles were produce by all 3 companies to supplement the springfield."

Its probably a MK.I SMLE (probably marked 'ShtLE' on the receiver band).
SMLE= Short Magazine Lee Enfield.

The 1917s, P14s, etc weren't made until a decade later.

That would be the M1917 and P14 rifles. M1917=30-06, P14= .303.

thanks, for the great info. my gun dont have a clip but i would like to find one. would this old gun be worth any money at all.

Yes, if the stock hasn't been cut down, its probably worth several hundred dollars.

Are there any other markings on the rifle? All of the rifles on such a rifle do have a meaning and can be used to identify it, regardless of how insignificant they look.
