ok i think i might have made a mistake with my long range target rifle

What would you get under 1500 closer to 1000 i would like to stay under that with a scope if i can
for both bolt action and semi auto

What? Huh? what are you asking/saying? you can get a rifle for $1000-1500 that'll shoot 600yds. Factory rifle, factory ammo too btw.

i was not sure if i could do 600 yards for 100 to 1500 bucks
what would you recommend
i would like a semi auto if i can get one with that distance

$1500? Now we're talking about a working mans budget. If that's the case I would have something built up on a Rem. 700 action. I bought a Rem. 700 VS several years ago and sent it out and had a Accuracy International heavy varmint barrel put on it and also a McMillan M40A1 stock put on it so it would replicate the USMC M40A1. About the only thing that it lacks is the Unertl 10X scope and to clip-slot the receiver and it would be an exact replica of the M40A1. It shoots MOA out to 600 yards. That's as far as I've ever shot it. I think the whole package cost me $1800 so I went over the mark just a little but I'm very satisfied with it.

I have a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless with a Silver 3x-9x Nikon Buckmastersscope on it that i plan on using for 600 yards. Here is a 3 shot group at 200 yards withWinchester Super-X 180gr Power Points.

In a semi auto I would look at the various AR-10's available.

DPMS has a good selection of .308 Ar's thatshould easily do 600 yards if you do your part.

There are also many other manufacturers that offer very accurate AR platforms chambered in the .308 and a variety of other cartridges capable of 600 yard shots.

a ar is what i was thinking dpms has a model that is set up for the military snipersthe Panther™ LRT-SASSit cost is 2100 though stock but it comes with everything you need minus the scope.
I was looking at bushmaster but there really only set at a few cals so not sure i will go with them even though i love there ars

well kind but no i asked out to 1000 yards and have deicead that with my budget to stay around 600 yards and then i did not get alot of reponds

1st you have to pick an accurate cartridge, if you're just looking for target practice, I just read an article, I'll rephrase what it said...."only a few rounds achieved any real popularity in target shooting" ie....the .223, 6mm norma BR, 6.5/284 norma, .308 (7.62nato). So certainly any of these would work, the .270 win has always had a reputation of being very accurate, my semi auto browning BAR touches holes at 100yds.

the remington action has always been known for accuracy, though I think recently I heard newer models aren't as good as the old ones? not sure. You could get a CZ in .308 maybe?

Can get a weatherby vanguard sub-moa.....



Certainly a heavier, bolt action would be more apt to get you better shooting than a semi auto I'd think. Sako's are known for being awesome, maybe one of those in any of the above calibers, not sure where they price though probably 1000-2000?

Top it with a quality scope, with some quality mounts. If using factory ammo, buy a bunch and shoot and compare. If accuracy is yoru goal may hav eto try differ brands and diff weights. My .270 loves 130gr from federal.

thanks alot i plan to do some traveling over the next several years so if i spend a few grand on a good rifle i want to use it for hunting

such a tough call, a few of those calibers, came from the article I read, for hunting......the .308 or .270 would be a great place to start, id say .270 over .308 if you want something flatter shooting to 500yds.

Sako makes a fine rifle. HS precision. I think those are the 2 I'd look towards probably. HS is custom/semi custom and 1/2 MOA gurrantee I believe, not sure about sako, probably 1 MOA at most, if not 1/2" MOA.

HS is $2500 I think about. If you go with them I'm sur eyou can talk with those guys and see what they come up with. They'd have more knowledge of wat shoots well through their guns, and maybe how they feel about new rounds, .270 WSM, or .300 WSM, i read that these should have been very accurate, but kinda fell short of claims/expecations. Which leads me back to what was wrong with the .270 Win, that we needed a .270 wsm?

I think a .270 Win in either brand, in a nice bolt action, you'll be shooting 6" groups at 5-600yds. Now you're making me want a new .270, that is something to be said, having one gun you love, know how it shoots, etc...even if under powered, you can't knock it down if you can't hit it. I think the .300 win mag is known for very good accuracy as wel, mine shoots pretty great, though bigger caliber, I think is harder to get sum MOA groups, but elk at 500yds a 300 sounds nicer than a .270, though with modern bullets, I'd take the shot with a .270 and a quality bullet. especially if you know exactly where that bullet's going to hit. Thanks, you've caused me to add new .270 to my list, haha, maybe an HS precision. I have other's I think I'd have to use on that elk first though.

I have seen some impressive shots latly from two surprisingly new rounds
.223wssm and the .270wsm wow saw two deer fall in there tracks at 550 yards with the .270wsm.and a yote at 600 with the .223wssm.Look them over atleast.

Your asking for two different rifles. If you want an inexpensive target rifle go with the Savage Model 12 F Class in a 6.5-284. You can get the gun for around $1000. Puta decent Leupold on it and you'll be just over $1500. That gun has a 3" forarm and is set up for Benchrest target shooting. It will be a little cumbersome to hunt with. It is not a carry gun. If you want a dual purpose target rifle and good carry weight hunting rifle your chioses are unlimited. The Remington Sendaro Series are very accurate but they have the standard varmint style forarm and will not be as stable to shoot at long distance target. It will be just about impossible to compete with a benchrest quality gun with any varmint rifle at a 600 yard match. If you buy the savage get it with a faster twist barrel so it will stablize the 142 grain bullet.

i have never reloaded i want to try it out soon
but if i do i will not start on a 2000 dollar gun more like buy a few throw aways like some 3030s or cheap pistols to make sure i do not blow something up

thanks guys for all the help i am going to take this all in and when my head stops hurting i will try and make the decision
been working on it off and on for almost a year now
but i did take off of everything and go into the woods so all in all about 6 months
