good overall gun for yotes, deer and varmints?

What is a good rifle for coyotes, racconns, deer and other varmints?

I like the 22-250..

I also like to .22-250, but its on the low side for deer. I would go with a .243, which is great for deer, perfect for yotes, yet a bit stout for varmints. I'd rather be slightly over gunned than under.

Your right.. I didn't see the deer part.. I'd upgrade to 243

.243 would be my choice, though the 6mm Remington is a great choice also if you reload

25-06 does it all

243 is my go-to gun for a dual purpose gun.

deer/varmints, I think any of the .243/6mm are the way to go, kinda the purpose of those calibers, .25-06 is more deer than varmint, .223's are more varmint than deer. I think the 6mm Rem gives you about 200fps more than the .243 Win. I think handloads in 6mm can do almost what the .25-06 can do. I know some guys love the .25-06, then some guys don't because it doesn't give you much that a 6mm doesn't. There's always the .240 weatherby too! A new .243 might be nice, something like the .240 weatherby, but loaded by remington or something.....and beltless. we have the 6mm but it isn't really available, maybe I'm just going to have to get a 6mm and take up handloading.

I agree with everyone that said .243. It is definetly the way to go, .22 is too small, anything 30 and up is much too large for small critters. All it'll do is make hamburger outta them :D

For those of you wanting the velocity of a 6mm in a .243...Buy a box of Federal Premium 85gr BTHP...3320fps...Perfect bullet for crows, groundhogs and deer....

for all of them i would say a .243, that is what i use and it works good

One more vote for a .243. Even though I have multiple calibers to chose from, I find myself picking up my favorite .308 for both varmints and deer.

so a .243 for coons, deer, yotes, hogs, possums and any other animal in that range? what is a .223, .30/06, 30/30 good for? i would be using this gun on probably just yotes and coons and target shooting if that changes anything....

A 223 would be great for coons and yotes and target shooting. When you threw deer hunting in the equation, that takes it up another level to a 243.

Another vote for the 6 mm Rem. if you reload but you might have a hard time finding a new rifle chambered for the 6 mm...[>:]

how much would a .223 and a .243 cost? i might get a .223 or a .243 or maybe even a .22 magnum
tell me what you think

RE: good overall gun for yotes, deer and varmints?

I guess the price all depends on how much you want to spend. LOL

YOu can pick up a Savage/Stevens for around $279 I believe for a low-end gun that will still shoot very well.

My AR I'm shooting right now I have about $750 in the gun by itself, without optics or back up iron sights.

My 243 I'm shooting is a Savage special run gun that I got for about $500 without optics.

no, no , no. i wanted one for deer because my uncle owns some land up in oregon and would like to go hunting there sometime for deer with him. i follow the state regulations. i use a mossberg 500 with hornady sst's that can shoot accurately to 125 yards. there wouldbe no need for a rifle for the kind of hunting i do in thick woods. do you live in hamilton? if so where?

Id say the 25-06, it has better ballisitcs than the .243, and a little more punch than the 22-250.

Look at the ballistic table on the .243 Federal Premium 85gr BTHP...Which 25-06 bullet are you choosing that will beat that one????

RE: good overall gun for yotes, deer and varmints?

I would say the .223, 22-250, .243 and the 25-06 would be decent picks if you use the correct bullet for the job. My pick would be the .243 as well. I wouldn't try and pick a bullet to do it all though. I would find a varmint bullet that was really accurate out my gun, then find a bullet designed for big game that shot well. You are not going to need the precision on deer that you would on a woodchuck at 2 or 3 hundred yards.

The .223 and .22-250 would work, and the .223 has the advantage of cheaper ammo. However both are tad light for deer in my opinion. They would work, no doubt in my mind. However they will limit you to range and shot placement.

The 25-06 would work well, but a bit larger than what you really need for your circumstances in my opinion. Now if your main goal was deer with some varmint and coyote mixed in I would say it would be a great choice. The 25-06 shoots about 200 fps faster in most cases than the .243 with the same weight bullets. And it gives you the option of a slightly heavier bullet choice. However the .243 gives you some lighter bullet options than the 25-06 will. The 25-06 is a long action, all the others listed are short actions, it also has slightly more recoil as well from what I understand.

Hornady has a 58 grn bullet with a muzzle velocity of near 3800 fps for the .243. I'm thinking of trying them in my savage 16, my gun shop said they have heard good things about them from customers.

My opinions anyway

Paul

Maybe the 85 grn Federal V shock 25-06 ammo that yeilds 3550 fps with the same weight bullet;).

Or the Hornady Light Mags in 117 grn at 3110 fps with a 32 grn heavier bullet.

RE: good overall gun for yotes, deer and varmints?

I would agree with the 243 croud.Hornady makes a V-max 58grain ammo for it that travels at 3760 fps thats faster than most 223 loadings and equal to standard velocity 22-250 loads, but the 243 does it with a heavier bullit than the other two could use to acheive this velocity, thus having more energy at the impact. So you could dust a coyote as far as you could hit it.Then on your Oregon deer hunt you can easily find several 80 to 100 grain factory loads or if you handload you can go a little heavier to 110 grain bullet or so and have a very capable 300 yard deer rifle.I have two 243's that shoot the 58 grainhornady and the 95 grain federal fusion very well.If ammo cost isn't a concern this would be a great caliber. If you wanted something cheaper to shoot a 223 would do the varmint part good and I have killed a few deer with it,but your effective range as a deer rifle would be cut down considerably and neck shots would be more effective for the 223 on a deer, body shot can kill with it but you need to hit them good as with any rifle.243 ammo 12.97- around 30 dollars for 20rnds.223ammo-5.49 for UMC 45grain hollow point 20rnds upto about 29bucks for balistic tip winchester 20rnds.I shoot blackhills 55 grain soft point for about $29 for 50 in my 223.The 243 would be a good dual purpose rifle for varmint and deer.the 223 would work for both, but the 243 would do it better!!
