Default dpms AR-15 peopleI need your help!!

I posted awhile back that I wanted to build (put together) an AR-15 and I am just getting around to it. My local gun shop has a stripped lower for $110 and I can get the lower parts kit for $47.00 on gunbroker (unless you guys know of a cheaper one). My question is that I want to build a .308 .260 7.62x396.8 oranything but a .223because I alredy have a .223 colt AR-15. So can you get a reciever that says .308.260 etc on them or are you restricted to a .223? I didn't see any on gunbroker. Also, are these "builds" as reliable as factory guns if they are done correctly? Any advice is helpful, thanks.

A AR15 receiver will build a .204, .223, 6.8, 7.62x39 and a .300wisper. To do a build of .243, .260, .308, and.300rusm you need a .308 lower.

Devil dog is right on.
There are only two places making 308/260 recievers right now that I know of. Armalite, DPMS and Rock River. There may be a billet reciever available, but I don't know for sure. I have a DPMS LR308 w/ a 24 inch fluted barrel and love it.

Anyway, the parts on these platforms will not have the same interchangability that the AR15s have. The uppers from one maker will not fit on the uppers from another. Right now, Armalite is very expensive but can be found fairly easily. DPMS in 308 and 260 can be found fairly easy if you look and run between $900 and $1200 for a gun depending on setup. The 300 and 243 are harder to find and if you order one from DPMS, expect several months wait. Rock River just started distributing their version of the AR-10 in 308, I am sure other calibers will follow, but at this time they are hard to find. I understand they cost more than the DPMS, but not as much as the Armalite.

I have seen the DPMS LR (AR10) recievers for sale, but they generally run $250 to $300. Uppers are fairly expensive too. I saw some in the midway or Brownell's catalog not too long ago.

One other option, if you want to stay with the cheaper AR15 lower and upper hardware would be to go with 6.5 grendal, 6.8 spc, 300 whisper, 221 fireball, 458 SOCOM, 450BM, 500 BW or one of the new calibers that does fit the AR platform. There are lots of options out there.

i would think again... the problem with the 7.62x 39 is the feeding. They require a banana shaped magazine which are different from the Ak's. They are usually unreliable. ALSO... consider that the Direct Impringment system of the AR is sensitive and works well with .223 but a larger caliber is likely to create more fouling and more problems....

if you want a 7.62x39 then just save yourself some money and hassle by buying an AK-47.

think about what you want to do with it? and re consider the .223 or if money isnt an option or you reload then go for the 6.8 or .458socom upper.

My choice would be the .458 SOCOM if only becasue I plan on building one myself
It offers 45/70 ballistics and uses standard .223/556 magazines.

i dont know about that ,i have a DPMS in 7.62X39 and i love it . it wont shoot that cheep stuff as i put in aJP trigger in and the lighter hammer does not hit hard enough to dent them military primers but so what i reload for it any way.
works great on deer and very accurate.

you seem to be a part of a small percentage of 7.62x35 ARowners ive heard from who have good things to say about this caliber upper. Usually everyone has problems withit.
Probably because most people who buy this set up, do so not to hunt but to go plinking with and as a defensive rifle. They use military grade ammunition like wolf whichtend to be dirty.

what magazine do you use?
accurate to what range? MOA?
how many rounds do you put through it between cleanings?

glad to hear its working for you, wish more people had this success with it
