RE: Your best deal buying a gun...

Bought a 1894 winchester in 30-30 Ackley Improved made in 1985 or so... one of the first angle ejects... short, compact rifle, came with an FX-II 6x42 Leupold scope, RCBS dies, and two boxes of ammo. This was right after Winchester went under too.... gave $200 for the lot.

Answered an add in the paper a few years ago that said old colt revolvers for sale call #. Went and met the fellow and purchased a 1st generation SAA made in the early 1920s in 38 spl for $100. Gun is worth over $7K.... I gave it to the gentleman who sort of took me in when I was in college. Fed me every Sunday, let me keep my guns there, etc etc. He bought me my first beer and gave me a Cuban cigar after grilling ribs for me and my friends on my 21st birthday... all that after shooting skeet all day long. Sort of like a second father. He and his family helped me make it through some times. He really enjoys it, and he knows EXACTLY what it is... because he was insturmental in getting me into some of the older american arms.

Oh yeah.... and I won a Weatherby Mark XXII :D I'm still gloating... sorry!

I traded a young male doberman to a guy for a sporterized 7.62 Mauser. He thought the dobie would make a good cow dog. A few weeks later I went out in the morning to feed the animals and that dobie was back! I saw the guy in town later and mentioned it, half expecting him to want the rifle back. He said to keep it.

I spent HOURS on that rifle trying to de-lead the bore. Never did get it to shoot worth a flip. I'm guessing that he already knew that :)

I forgot one... not really a gun, but close enough. A guy at work saw an ad in the paper stating that an old closedwarehouse downtown was clearing out unwanted items before it was to be torn down. The sherrifs opened the doors at 8 a.m., it was first come, first served and take whatever you wanted. There were old boxes of clothes, nuts/bolts, rope, etc. He came across a box of approx.6 - 7 brand new Browing Belgium shotgun barrels! They were greased and wrapped in wax paper. He grabbedthem and ran it out to his truck.(hesaid people wererunning all over the place!) He took them to our local gun shop and they offered him $200 for the lot. He sat on them for a while and decided he wanted the $200, but he offered them to me for the same price. I didn't know what they were worth, but I knew they were worth more than that... I did some internet research and found out they were all A-5 barrels. (assorted gauges) I put the first one on the Ebay and it brought a little over $200. I couldn't believe it. I sold the other from $200- $250 each. I used that money to buy my first and only custom varmint rig. (Rampro 22BR w/ Lightforce scope) I still owe that guy and his wife a steak dinner...

I doesn't compare to what some of you guys have gotten, but I got an almost new 12 gauge 870 Express with a Hastings slug barrel, and a Leupold 6x compact scope mounted on it, and 4 boxes of slugs for $200. The barrel alone is worth more then the whole package, and I can't find the scope listed anywhere, so I have no clue as to what it's worth.

all time best deal of mine. Pre-64 Model 94 30-30. One of my vendors mentioned to me one day he had a rifle that was given to him. He's a non shooter and basically a non gun guy. He brought it by and asked if i wanted it...bought him lunch and gave him $50....he was happy.

Bought an old Savage 110 22-250 to start my son out shootin pds with me. Paid $140 for it with a 4x12 Leupold VXII ao in Redfield mounts. We used that gunfor 5 years shooting truck loads of prairie dogs, coyotes and misc. vermin and never even adjusted the scope. We still have it and still use it but a year ago I gave it the complete make over and made it a 22-250 AI.

I bought a 2002 Savage bolt-action in 7mag with a scope at walmart for $170. It turned out to be a sub-MOA rifle. The scope was a simmons, and wasn't the greatest, but it never lost zero. I bought a Rossi single-shot in 7.62x39 for $120 at gander mtn., I didn't think that was too great of a buy until I shot it.

Three years ago, I went to a local walmart to get some tires, while I was waiting I went to the sporting goods dept. to see what they had. they were getting out of selling guns at the time, and had three left. One was a synthetic stocked Winchester M70 in .300WM, $150. I checked with the "kid" in charge, and he said it was a correct price, so I got tires, and a rifle.

I was an an auction that had a 92 Winchester. They were running way behind on time and didn't get to the rifle. After the auction I asked the clerk what would they sell the rifle for. She pulled if up on her computer then asked me if it was worth $100.00. I told her "yes ma'am" and handed her the money.
