any input/experience with

Hornady 270 win, 140 gr. Boat Tail Soft Point Light Magnum ammo

it shoots seriously flat with high energy, but I'm wondering about terminal damage and exit wounds.

The hornady innerlock soft points I have shot have held up extremely well... the SSTs do as well.

The rifles (two of them both 7mm-08s) that I have shot light mag ammo out of did not shoot it well. That of course is a case by case basis. I have loaded some 162gr of those same soft points you asked about... and they shoot great and absolutely hammer deer.

shot those same 270 140 gr in my savage 270 about 5 years and it shot extremely well. took out 2 does with 1 shot on the last hunting trip i used it on b4 i sold it.

I use the 130g IB light mag in my 270. Its the only ammo that shoots under a3/4" for me, and I've tried them all. Probably spent more on ammo than the rifle, buts its like everything else, some like em and some dont. Cant speak to the 140, but the 130's work great, exited through shoulders at 350 yds, not excessive meat damage at all.

+2 on the "didn't shoot well out of my 7mm-08" part. I tried them. They didn't give me the accuracy I expect. Found a good handload that satisfies me.

any problems with damage to the rifle? H says not to use them in anything thats not closed breech, which makes sense. I'm wondering if even with a bolt, any damage seems to occur.

There was certainly never any to my rifle. The pressures are still within SAAMI specs. So it should be safe in any modern, fit for duty rifle.

These days , after trying several brands of ammo, including the Hornady Light Mags , all I shoot is the Light mag ammo in all of my rifles. These include 7mm-08, .243, .308, .270, 30.06. They shoot well in all of my rifles, and the wounds are great. D.R.T. dead. Since our season has ended in Arkansas I have bought about 10 more boxes of Hornady Light mag ammo. And I have been using the light Mag for about 2-3 years.

hornady doesn't suggest using it in semi-autos, otherwise I don't see a problem with it/damaging rifles. I'd listen to them and not use it in a semi auto, otherwise, try it out. May shoot flat for 140's, but just use regular 130gr's if not the light mag. Not much of a difference in energy etc....
