.577 NE or .600 NE double rifle?
If you were to have or build a double rifle, of these 2 calibers which would you chamber it for? and why? Let's assume both would cost the same, and shoot just as accurate as the other. The 600 would weigh a few lbs more.
The .577 shoots a 750gr bullet at around 2000-2100fps the .600 shoots a 900gr bullet around 1900fps the .577 was used more during the ivory trade than the .600 which came into existence towards the tail end of it. Which would you want? |

If you would hunt more, instead of worrying about these silly fantasies, you would be better off.

You better re-load .The rounds would probally be $400.00 per 20

I'm young and hunt plenty, and one day I'll own 1 of the 2.

RE: .577 NE or .600 NE double rifle?
I wouldn't build either.
#1. Recoil (aproaching 50BMG levels btw)would be absolutely brutal. #2. Because the recoil is so brutal the rifles would absolutely need to weigh at least15 pounds plus and would absolutely be a burden to carry around all day on a safari. #3. Not only would the cartridges cost a whole lot of money you likely would not find any in the middle of Africa should they get lost on the flight over there. #4. The only real good use for either of these two cartridges is to stop a charging elephant, rhino. Not a very good choice to "hunt" with IMO. |

What's wrong with the 470 NE or 500 NE? Personally I would go with a 416 Rigby or Rem. If or when I ever get to go on an African hunt this is what I would take along with a 300 mag for plains game. This trip is on my 'bucket list'.

Which would you want? But if I were having a double rifle built, it would be chambered for a much smaller round, and be made light enough that I would not have to hire a gun bearer to carry it!! But if you insist on shooting a double that will knock you down and stomp you, look at the newer 700 Nitro, or a 4-bore, or a 2-bore. These last two fire 1/4pound and 1/2 pound round balls respectively, and their conical bullets weigh significantly more than that, like 2,000 grains plus. If you are not addle-brained before you fire one, you will be after! |
RE: .577 NE or .600 NE double rifle?
Finally some guys that can talk about the .577 and 600, and not just my inquisitive nature.
I like the .577 more so than the 600 I think, kinda because it was used way more to stop enraged beasts/elephants in close quarters. If/when i goto africa I plan to have a .458 or .416 in my hand, really want to take a cape with 500gr bullets. Until recently I never considered thee .470 NE or 500 NE. since the .458 lott is the same if not slightly more gun than the .470, but double rifle, I think I forgot the purpose, 2 quick shots! I'd have to think about it, but now I can see their purpose, get 2? but which of the .470 and 500? since I'm kinda sold on the .577NE |
RE: .577 NE or .600 NE double rifle?
What is the largest gun you have ever shot? Most people have no idea how much recoil some of them guns have. We have a .375 H&H and it will give you a headache when you shoot it and it has nowhere the recoil of the guns you are talking about.
