H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
I start college next year, and taking a week to go to camp in pennslvania for a week is gonna be impossible... I might hunt opening day and both weekends there, but I am looking for a slug gun to hunt here in Ohio with. I have always just bowhunted here in Ohio..... so my question is does anyone have any experience with these Ultra Slug Hunters, and do you have anything good/bad to say about it?? I like the price, and cost is definately a consideration since I am not rich (yet haha) any info on these guns will be great!

RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
Great gun. Very accurate guns. As long as you dont mind single shots i would go for it. Where in PA are you going to be?

RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
There is a ton of good info on these guns both 12 & 20g in this forum.
Do a search on H&R and you should find enough info to keep you reading all night. BTW - I have the H&R Ultra scoped 20g. Great shooter and I'm ready to retire the 12g for deer and stick with the 20g. |
RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
I have a 20 gauge and it is a shooter. I currently shoot Lightfield slugs and at 50 yards they will put them all in one hole. About a month ago was at a rifle range and decided to to over to the 200 yard lane and shoot my .270. After finishing I thought I would just try the 20 gauge and see what happens. The Lightfields missed the target low completely, Would say they shot about 20 inches low?? I had bought a box of SST and shot them, they all hit the paper, about 12" low. Group size also about 12". In the right hands this could be a 200 yard gun, I would have to shoot it more to be capable at that distance.

RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
I have killed out to as much as 210 yards with my H&R's - With a range finder and low to zero wind.
My 20 Gauge H&R - 3X9 Bushnell - Loves the Federal Barnes Expander 265gr. 1900fps My 12 Gauge H&R - 2X7 Leopold - Loves the Hornady SST's 300 gr. 2000 fps. I sight for 2 inches high at 100 , Zero at 150, 5 inches low at 200. If you have 200 yard opportunities stay away from lightfields...They will shoot tight groups though...if you're staying 120 yards and in.... I killed a Moose with my 12 gauge H&R with Ligthfields in 2001. 110 yards.....42 inch bull. The 20 gauge H&R will match anything the 12 Gauge has to offer....and its lighter....H&R's are hogs to carry. |
RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
so most would go with the 20 gauge? I hunt Indianna county PA, but I have rifles to hunt there, I am looking for a lug gun to use here in Ohio

RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
Most of my hunting is in heavy cover and don't think I would have a shot over 125 yards. But walking out there are a couple of fields that would present a 175-225 yard shot I am going to experiment with it a little before next season, how do the Barnes do at 200 yards?

RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
I just wanted to say that the best shot (or luckiest;)) I've ever seen was done with a 20ga H&R slug gun. We were screwing around shooting(or at)old spray paint cans at 430 yds last year before the season with our rifles. My buddy pulls out a slug gun and its all I can do not to bust out laughing. FIRST SHOT EXPLOSION OF RED PAINT! He will readily admit it was luck as he was holding "bout half up the tree behind the target". Still I was amazed.

RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
I have a fully rifled 870 and it hated the SST's but loves the Barnes. Definitely a 200 yard slug gun. Cant wait to use it next year.

RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
Its trial an error with what slugs will work best in your gun. I got good groups with winchester partion golds an even better groups from hornady SST out of my fully rifled winchester 1300 topped w/Elite 3-9x40 I'm 1.5 inches hi at 100yds. Most of my shots have been 100yds or less.

RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
The barnes will rage at 200 yards....put it on the spine....with a 2.5 inch hi bullet at 100 yards you'll light'em up at 200....if its windy....stay home and watch the game...

RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
430? Can't touch that....awesome...He held 6 feet hi know doubt

RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
I've had one for several years. A very accurate gun. Mine like remington copper solids and the hornady sst's. It groups the remingtons better. Sub inch groups at 75 yds. Only one draw back, it's heavy. around 14 lbs. Its not one your going to want to take walking on a drive.

RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
Just got in from shooting my new H&R Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe 20 Gauge with Nikon 2-7x32. She's a shooter!!! Did some quick sighting. Still needs a little more precise work, but good for now. We'll work on it when it's not 15 degrees out. Needless to say, I'm very happy with my purchase! Ended up using 3 packs of SST's. I think I might stick with them. I shot this gun better than my Remington 870 with 23" Cantilever barrel. Crisp trigger, decent recoil, a little heavy but not bad at all. Can't wait to use it this coming season! Everyone should have one of these.

RE: H&R Ultra Slug Hunter
i have the not as heavy model the tracker 2 in a 20ga, man this thing is awsome, the only diff. is weight, and its not drilled and tapped for a scope. it has rifled sights, and within 100 yards i will be good with out a scope.
