Good luck cjp - a decent O/U will cost easily double or more what you're lookiing to spend. Browning, Beretta etc. You may be able to get a Stoeger for around the price you're looking at but I have no experience with them. Also Savage and Mossberg make an O/U for around this price.

Not sure where you are, but, if there's a nearby Academy, you might take a look at one of these:

Anyone have a suggestion for a good 12 or 20 gauge over under for the casual clay bird shooter? Looking to spend $500 or less if possible.

I think the Remington Spartan can be had for right around $400. Has screw in chokes.

The spartan 310 is very much overlooked. Build wise it is solid, the detailing is not the greatest but for a working gun. Its ideal. I love mine. Ive got the 12ga 28" nickle reciever with pheasant on one side and a duck on the other. Would and did buy it over a stoeger or mossberg anyday.
