Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
I'm looking at scopes and don't really know what to go with. I would like to stay around $300 or maybe under if at all possible. I am looking at something around the 3X9 category and probably either 40 or 50mm. Let me know what you guys like or if you have any suggestions for me. Thanks for the info.

Leupold Vari-X II 3X9X40. Should cost around $260 to $280.

RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
id go with the vari-x II..if you really want to save some money go with a used one if you can find one...a guy i know owns a gun shop and any gun that he gets with a leupold he takes off and sells them seperatly..sells a used one for 165 usually..which is a steal being they have a lifetime warrenty...saved me a heck of alot of money i didnt have..took me almost all summer to save up my grass cutting money to buy the one i did for 150...i used mune for a season now and it worked great..clear as a bell too..

The 3x9 is a good choice for power, as for the front objective lens, the larger the objective lens the more light is gathered for low light conditions. You should also check on the eye relief especially if your shooting a magnum... Leupold is the way to go. Good luck..

RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
I think their are a number of scopes that would fit the bill, Bushnell, Nikon, Leupold, etc. The 3x9 is a solid choice and I prefer 50mm objectives. However I wouldn't suggest buying a lower model 50 mm, over a higher model(quality) 40 mm scope. A budget is a budget and if you don't or can't up it to match the scopes base quality than stick with a higher quality 40MM.
Everybody has their favorites and eyes are different, so really buy what you like and as much as you can afford in whatever brand, power and objective. I have had excellent results with bushnell elites -3200-4200, loopy vari x III and the Burris Sign. Series. So I wouldn't hesitate in pointing you to look at either one of those scopes. (However the last 2 would cost you more than 300.00) Other guys have mentioned the varix II or some say the VX II from Loopy, however I wasn't really blown away by either of these scopes and personally opted for the Bushnell Elite 4200 and payed much less. Just my opinion though! |
RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
Ditto....Vari-X II, 3x9x40 (or 50) your choice. Excellent scope... :)

RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
In this order:
1. Leupold Vari-X II 2. Pentax Lightseeker 3. Nikon Monarch You may find you like one of these better than the others. Smile and go with it! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Good Dogwork and Good Hunting |
RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
3 X 9-40 or roughly equivalent is a good choice.....after that, I personally have never found any correlation in price and quality.....Tasco has always been good for me as well as the Bushnells.
Hey...it's your money.....spend it your way. |
RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
One pretty cheap scope that I have found to be tough as nails and an all around bargin that works is the Pine Ridge line from Cabelas. My hunting buddy has a couple of them that he has used for 4-5 years on several Magnum rifle. Not one problem. Good and clear. They run from about 50.00 to about 110.00. They have a good warranty including a 60 day complete money back warranty. Plus Cabelas has a no question asked return policy. I am going to get one and shoot the hell out of it during the off season. I have way to many rifles to put real expensive scopes on. I have also never had a problem with any of my Bushnell Trophy or Banner scopes. I had a Ten Power Banner sihouette scope for ten years. The silhouette rifle had countless thousands of rounds shot through it, more than a guy would shoot in 50 deer seasons. It performed perfectly and I sold it when I quit the game for just what I paid for it. It don,t get any better than that. At the time the scope cost about 70.00 bucks new.

RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
I recently purchased a Swift Premier 3-9x40 and really like it. Swift is a little known company that makes fine optics. They are held in very high regard in birding circles, and birders are often very picky. I have personally used Swift binos for the past 10 years without incident. So far, I am very pleased with the scope. They, too, have a lifetime waranty and the Premier goes for around $150 depending on the store. HOpe this helps.

RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
Alright fellas....my buddy has convinced me to spend more $$. Dang him. lol I have about $1600 in my bow and everything dealing with that, he said why go half-a**ed with this. What do you guys think about the Vari-X III 3.5x10 with the illuminated duplex?? I think I have all of the particulars right.
And also just a side note.....I am putting this scope on my 30-06, Remington model 700. Would you guys go with a scope and still use the iron sights(which I believe my gun has) or no iron sights and just the scope?? I appreciate all your help. "There's nothing better than being out in the woods". |
RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
Oh I forgot....I would probably still stick with the 50mm size. Thanks

RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
I have a 3.5 X 10 X 50 VariX III on my 7 Mag.wouldn't have it any other way.Mount the scope as close to the barrel as you can.

RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
Swamp....is there any worry about your lenses fogging up?? I don't know much about scopes, but one reason for using the irons sights would be for that reason(I think). And also having a deer under 50 yards or so. If you have a deer at 40-50 and under, do you pull up and see all brown?? Once again, I don't know much about them, so all info is great. Thanks

RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
Your choice of Varix III 3.5 x 10 x 50, is an excellent one. I wouldn't go with the illuminated duplex, one more thing to die or go wrong and really no need for it. (It also looks ugly and adds weight) I have only 50 mm oblective scopes on my guns and believe me if you can't see...IT AIN'T LEGAL!!! Lose the irons and mount it on the medium posts, this will keep it reletively close to your barrel and eye positioning should be ok. If you find you have to lift your head to see and rifle is not tucked comfortably, go with a 40 mm. Seeing you haven't had much scope experience, I think this is critical. Make sure that scope is in the right place and you don't have to adjust to its position. Basically you should be able to close your eyes and shoulder your weapon to the shooting position, when you open your eyes that scope should be bang on. Buy leupold dovetail mounts and your set.
As far as fogging, I always carry a eye glass cloth in a ziploc, just in case. You can put flip up scope covers for rain, if you desire. 100% frank, never had a problem and I hunt in below zero weather all the time. The key is climitize the optic to the conditions to reduce fogging or haze. (ie: don't drive around in hot truck and then plan to jump out and see well in cold temps.) Also if walking and you sweat or heat up, make sure to keep the lens away from your body to ensure your heat is not transfered and it may create a small window of haze. |
RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
Under 300 bucks Weaver or Sightron scopes should fit the bill

RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
a 3x9x50 VX ll Leupold will come in right at $300.A 3x9x40 Zeiss Conquest right at $380 and a 3.5x10x50 Vari X lll at $450.The Zeiss 3.5x10x44 is at $420-450.These are all good scopes with good resale value and great warranties. All prices are USA.IMHO there are no other scopes in this price range in these two scopes class.

RE: Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?
Leupolds are good, but for a cheaper scope I like Swift. I have a Swift 6.5x-18x50 on my 22 squirrel gun. It also has a lifetime warranty. My Leupold is great too.
