needing to learn about what .22 or smaller is???
I can only hunt coyote with a shotgun with shot or a .22 or smaller. I am looking into getting a rifle and have come up with some questions. What are the guns that are .22 or smaller? I thought it would just be the 22 mag, 22LR and .17. Now I have had folks tell me that the .223 is considered a .22. I just do not want to buy a gun and have it not be legal. Sorry for being ignorant to this suject.

I looked the VA regs. up. Since it refers to some areas as "22 rimfire" I assume just "22" means rimfire or centerfire. That would make 222, 223, 222 mag., 22-250, and any other "22" caliberlegal. I'd call the dept of game and inland fisherers before I headed out into the field though. I can make assumptions all day long, but they are the ones that know the law.

If you’re looking for a 22 calibre you can have such a selection like 221 Fireball, 222 Rem. 223 Rem, 22-250 Rem. 220 Swift. to name a few. These are all center fire.
You can also have the 22 lr. & 22 WRM and these are rim fire.
Now you can go smaller like the .17 Rem the new .17 Fireball and the 204 Ruger. These are all center fire.
For Rim fire you have the .17 HMR and .17 Mach 2. ...

I'd go .22-250 Rem, or .220 Swift all the way, period!
I'm not a fan of the .17's...etc... .204 ruger.....they're just too small. A 45gr bullet from a .223 is tiny already, but deadly, stay with the .223 caliber.
Some guys love the .223, it's a military round, ie M-16 shoots it, but personally, I'm not nuts about it.
Most varminters agree the .220 swift which has been around I think almost 70 years or more now, and btw first round to break 4000fps is the best varmint round. though its not widely loaded/available, compared tot hat of the .22-250 Rem.To me if you handload and want the best get the .220 Swift, if you just want to buy ammo wherever get the .22-250 Rem. Some are saying the Swift is becoming more and more popular, and I hope it does!
PS- all 22's are of .223 caliber, .223 , 22-250, 220 swift, even 22 LR all are .223, even the 221 fireball etc...I beieve are .223.
