Default thoughts on 25-06 for hunting deer

I have a new england single shot in 270 and am wanting to purchase another barrell but dont know what caliber to get.. I noticed the 25-06 has a 26inch barrell and the rest have 22 inch barrells so i figured the accuracy would be a little better on it.. but i cant seem to decide between 25-06, 7mm-08, or a 308. any help would be appreciated....

The 25-06 is incrediable on deer. Get it and you won't regret it. I have a friend who shoots a H&R single shot in 25-06 with the 26" barrel and routinely kills deer out past 400 yards. Great rifle.

The 7mm-08 and the 308 are great too but you already have a 270 so its really pointless to get anything larger then the 26-06.

If you already have a .270, I'd think about something other than a .25-06. Also barrel length only increases accuracy up to about 22" barrels, longer barrels are designed to give more velocity, hence magnums etc...impose 26" barrels. At first this seems kinda illogical, but it's true. I think a .25-06 is so close to a .270, and a .270 is one of the most accurate cartridges ever. 25-06 would be nicer for coyotes, than the .270, but what type of hunting are you looking to do? A 6mm Rem. will do almost everything a .25-06 will, though it's not as popular as the .243 Win, which won't do what the .25-06 will.

A step up from the .270 Win. in my book would be a .30-06, or a .300 WSM, I'd get the .300 WSM
.30-06 is the best all around, but do you plan to always own 1 rifle? If not, then specialize a little more would be my advice. If you own a .270 and a .300 WSM, you're pretty well suited for most in north america.

If you're just looking to deer hunt, some guys love the .338 Win. Mag. and that combined with a .270 you certainly could hunt everything in north america! I wouldn't worry about the kick of the .338 either, I have a .340 wby, and swear it kicks less than my .300 win mag. The .340 is more like the .338 Rem Ultra Mag, both are a step up from the .338 win mag.

A step down would be a .243 Win, or 6mm Rem, go lighter if you're thinking about coyotes/antelope. Bigger if you're thinking, elk, mule deer, moose, bear....

My advice, .300 WSM, .338 Win. Mag., .243/6mm, in any order. Tell us what you're thinking?

PS- .25-06, 7mm-08 and .308, and the .270, I feel like they're all in the same class, less you owned everythign needed from a .22-250 to a .458 Lott, I'd look to other calibers.

I'd have to agree with the last 2 post somewhat. If you have a 270, even though the 25-06 is an excellent deer cartridge, it would be a down grade from the 270. Not knowing your financial situation and what else besides deer you hunt the only thing I would suggest is that if you hunt ghogs, yotes etc then you may want to get a .223, 22-250 or 243. If you ever plan on going for bigger game than the 30-06, 300WSM or even the 338WM would get the nod. Again, being that you have a 270, the 25-06 would IMO be a waste of $.

The 25-06 is probably my favorite deer cartridge. Load up with 110-120gr bullets and you're set as far as you can hit your target. I'll disagree with bronko, don't think the 25-06 is a "downgrade" from the 270.Its reputation is slightlybetter for accuracy and I see it used for extended rangesas much(maybe more) asthe 270...they are fairly similar.

The .25-06 is a great deer cartridge, but so is the .270. "Let's see, should I take an apple for lunch today, or should I take an apple for lunch today"?

I agree with a couple previous posters that the .25-06 and the .270 are in the same class (in fact, the .308 and 7mm-08 fit that class, too).

You can cover a lot of country with a .270. I've known a lot of "old-timers" who have ONE deer rifle, and it's usually a .30-06 or a .270. They use them on anything from coyotes to moose.

Same song, ninth verse......... Basically I must agree with everyone's recommendation" Get something a little different this time!

I have used both the .270 Win. and the .25-'06 quite a lot. The .25/'06 is a great deer cartridge; so is the .270 Win. When used with 115-120-grain bullets, there is no practical difference between the .25/'06 and a 130-grain bullet in the .270.

With lighter bullets, the .25/'06 is a little better suited to varmint blasting-less overkill!

Basically, there is not enough difference between these two to prefer one over the other, except that the .270, when used with 150-160-grain bullets, is a better elk rifle. For deer, it makes no difference.

I wasn't putting down the 25-06 and I did say it was an excellent deer cartridge. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion and mine is the 270 is just a TAD bit better, especially with a good 130 gr bullet. But its like comparing apples to apples - the difference is minimal. But in regard to this post, if he has a 270, why wast the money on a 25-06? Get something smaller like a varmint chambering, or bigger like a 30 cal or more.
