17 HMR Rifles

I am probably way late on this topic, but I am getting ready to purchase a 17 HMR. I was leaning towards the Savage 93R17BTVS. Interested on some feedback positive or negative. Also interested in the best ammo for this weapon. I was told that Hornady V-Max in 20 grain shot the best groups. I am a bow hunter but like firearms in the off season. Thanks

I have the 93R17-BVSS and it is a real shooter. All I had to do with mine is change the trigger. Mine was pre-accutrigger and it was heavy and gritty. I replaced it with one from RifleBasix and it is set at 12oz. Mine shoots the 17gr V-Max loads the best. The 20gr XTP shoots ok, but not as well.

Here is a 10 shot group at 50 yards with mine. There was no wind and the temp was right around 70 degrees.

Thanks Longrifle for the reply, this is consistant with everything I have seen so far. Should pick mine up in a couple of days. You know how it is in Illinois

I have a Savage 93R17GLV(Left hand plain jane/bull barrel) with accutrigger. It shoots 1" or better at 100 yards. While the 17gr vmax bullets shoot the best groups the 20gr xtp actually has a better average as it is rarily dead calm here and therefor at 100 yards the xtp doesn't drift as much as the vmax bullet making them my primary bullet of choice. I have done nothing but clean and shoot this little fella.

Go ahead and buy it...you'll love it! Mine likes the cci's the best...but I believeit will shoot the whole box of anything under an inch at 100..lol.

No problem. Good luck on the new iron. I really like that BTVS model, I probably would have bought it had it been available when I got mine. And yes, I know how it is here in this state.[:'(][:@][:-][X(][>:][&:]:D

I love my Savage 93R. I don't recall the exact version (It was something like 93R GV.)

It is by far the most accurate firearm that I own. You will not regret buying one.

RE: 17 HMR Rifles

Well I purchased a 93rBTvxs, it was purchased from dicks sporting goods. Savage mocks them up for sale. It looks just like the 93RBTVS with the exception of the stock and barrel. The barrel is heavy but blued not stainless and the stock is a darker laminate. Unable to post pics, but I like it and looks good. Haven't shot it yet but looking forward to it. Called SAVAGE and they told me that they do all their test fireing with HORNADY VMAX 20gr. Couldn't find the 20gr in my area so purchased the 17 gr. VMAX Thanks to all that replied, appreciate it!!!!
