.270 or 7mm-08?
 

I am looking into getting a new deer rifle and these are the top two on my list and was wondering what everyone has to say about the two? any advice would help...thanks

Which 270, I have both 270 WSM and 7mm-08 and find they are both excellent for deer, however the 7mm-08 is a good choice for a low recoil cartridge...

Either one is an excellent choice for deer-sized game and even elk and black bear at moderate range with premium bullets. Balistics and recoil are similar. If you shoot factory ammo, I'd go .270. It can be found everywhere. If you handload, I'd go 7mm-08, more bullet selection.

First thing I look at are comparable balistics. (No sense in comparing a .22 with 30-30) These two are very close using Federaals chart and the 140 gr Nosler accubond. The .270 muzzle velosity is 150 more FPS, and about 3" higher at 400 yards. (slightly flatter).
That being "equal" . . . I then consider things like ammo availability, re-sale, recoil, etc. I don't roll my own, so when I see that Federal, for example, shows 10 .270 carts to choose from and only 4 for 7mm-08 in the "Premium Vital Shock" section, I'm thinking .270 works for me. Nothing worse than hunting in south bumf*!^k WY and need some more ammo. Your local sporting goods/appliance/furniture store is therefore more likely to have some kind of .270 and nothing in 7mm-08's!
They are both great rounds. I have harvested big game with both (elk). The 7mm-08 does have slightly less kick with the same weight bullet.
I guess I talked myself into the .270.

The .270 is a great round you will find in every ammo shop in the country. The 7mm-08 is not as abundant but in all the major stores you can find.

What you have to look at is the .270 has a bit more power but the 7mm will kick less and is a short action so the rifle may be lighter allowing easier travel and packing.

I love my .270 but plan on getting a 7mm in the future just for kicks.

7/08 is the new kid on the block and a good cartridge. The 270 is older than me and won't get many "Oooohs and Ahaaas" when you show off your new gun. But the 270 is also legendary in its performance and has earned a place with the few "immortal" cartridges man has ever designed. If you want speed, flat trajectory, easily managable recoil and excellent results on almost everything with hooves world wide...get a 270. They didn't win their superlative place in firearms history because there was no competition for the honor. I love mine and find it the easiest rifle to shoot good of anything I've ever had.

Both are good choices. If it were me I would go with the .270. Ammo is readly available anywhere and the do a good job taking deer. The 7mm-08 is a very capable caliber also I'm just not a fan of the 7mm's. Recoil should be close on these calibers. Go with your gut if you don't you will probally wish you did.

The 7mm-08 came out in 1980 (not exactly a "new Kid")...The .270 came out in 1925 if I remember correctly...

If your shots are over bean fields where you can have 300-350 long shots, I'd opt for the .270...

If your shots are in the woods, or a box stand where a little shorter gun would be a little handier, I'd opt for the 7mm-08...

One of my brothers has a 7mm-08 and has had since about '81...My other brother and his son both have a .270...When skinning their deer, I can't tell by the damage which caliber did the deed...

Where I live, .270 shells are easier to come by...The local WalMart still had several boxes of 130gr CoreLokts for $14.24...They didn't have any for the 7mm-08...Might want to look into that as well...

I'd get a 7mm-08...just don't like the 270 as much :D
