H&R Handi Rifle vs Stevens Model 200
#32
The accuarcy with the H&R sucked to say the least. I have owned 2 off them (only for a few days). Friends of mine have also had trouble. I had .223 H&R and it would not hit a 8x11 sheet of paper at 100 yard everytime. And I can assure you it is not my shooting as Iown several sub MOA rifles.

It is pretty obvious you want the H&R, but are a bit shockedat the strongpro-Steven versus the luke-warm-at-best responses for the H&R so far.
So just forget everything you have read here and go get the H&R.

I don't think it is that nobody likes the Handi rifles. They are a great rifle at a decent price. It is just that for not much more money you can get a better design that holds more shells. If you really want the single shot H&R get one, there is nothing wrong with them. Every gun made has had accuracy issues at some point, they can't all be perfectly accurate. I have heard people be dissatisfied with every brand of gun at some point or another.
I will throw another analogy out there. Bushnell Banner Dusk to Dawn scopes are pretty decent scopes for the money. You don't hear too many people talk about what complete pieces of junk they are. Now if you could get a 3200 Elite for around the same amount of money wouldn't you do it? Now what if I told you you could one with more features for just a tad more money? While the Dusk to Dawn is a decent scope, it ain't no 3200
.
I don't think any of us (well one us) is saying the H&R's are junk and to stay away from them, just for the same money or a bit more there are better options now.

I own several quality bolt action rifles, you know which one I carry most of the time ? My handi rifle. They are simple guns and you can get different barrels in all sorts of calibers, and all kinds of stocks. My handi is a shooter and looks great !

The Stevens 200 is not "similar" to a Savage 110/10, it IS a savage 110/10. It is just the earlier version minus the accutrigger feature and a slightly different stock.
If that is the case I think I'd go with the Stevens. I have fooled with several of the older Savage 110's. Accutrigger or not I really like those guns. Right now I think I would go with a H&R but that's just because I don't have a single shot and would like to.

If single shot, then Ruger #1, falling block instead of break open.
In any case a single shot is a package with a built in limitation from the very start.
The refrain of many a guide and/or PH working with an American client.... "Stop admiring your shot and hit him again!".... too much deer hunting.
