winchester model 1897
 
i had a post for what i though my freind at school siad 1896 but its a 1897 he got it passed down to him and wants to start shooting and he came along me and i told him id help him so hes got a model 1897 pump with a external hammer any info he said there wont nutting on the barrle but 1897 i dont belive him but anyways heed some info what size shells will it shoot im guessin 2 3/4 but idk

I would take it to a gunsmith and let them look at it to see if it is even in good enough condition to fire. That is much more important than finding out the caliber right now. You don't want him to take it out and pull the trigger only to have it blow up in his face or something like that.
