Well I never thoughtI would get so many answers. Thanks to everyone. I agree that shooting both would be the ideal solution, and checking whichbullets arealways in stock is a great idea.I am very comfortable shootingmy 30.06 and was just wanting to see if anyone was having problems or did not likeeither of them. All of my gunshave been passed down to me andI am looking at getting something of my own,lighter, andI do not want something that kicks so bad that I flinch. My big huntingtrips are forElk or Moose and most shots are less than 300 yards. I did not know if the ballistic charts were right on the hitting power of the 270 WSM. I do not want to watch a Big Bull walk away. Thanks again to everyone.

A muzzle brake will solve any recoil issues you have, but be sure to get some earplugs.

A little over a year ago I went through the same delemma, 300wsm or the .270wsm...I settled on a Tikka T3 Lite in.270wsmand itis a dream to shoot. I did a bunch of research on both calibers and decided that the .270wsm was more suited to the game I wish to hunt (whitetails, mulies, elk and caribou). One of the deciding factors was looking at this recoil chart ( http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm)and saw the difference in recoil between the 2 cartridges...The 270wsm doesn't kick much worse then my .308 that I hunted withfor over25years.

From my personal experience I did find shooting the 300 WSM in the Tikka T3 Lite very unpleasant. I would rather shoot the 300 WSM in a heavier rifle...

My son's 300wsm Winchester M70 has a Pacmayer Decc. recoil pad and has a four port Mag-N-Porting. It is loud and recoil is worse then 270wsm in the Remington model 700xcr. I know the 700xcr has the Remington R3 pad by Limbsaver. Also gun fit and weight has to do alot with recoil too.

I'm a firm believer in the limbsaver recoil pads. Take any number on the recoil charts and divide it by 1/2 if you have a limbsaver installed. My 7mm Rem Mag with the limbsaver on it kicks less than my friends .270 Win with a factory butt plate.I would go with the .300 WSM since you mentioned elk are a regular target for you.
I would not go with any of the muzzle brake setups on a hunting rifle. You might get a tiny bit of increase in accuracy and a decrease in recoil but if you pull the trigger in a hunting situation without ear protection you could damage your hearing permanently. I personally use ear protection at the range but don't usually in hunting situations. My 2 cents. Nathan |
