Would you trade a 10/22 for a .17HMR?

Okay, I have a nice stainless synthetic Ruger 10/22. I got it a few years ago before the .17HMR was readily available. I don't shoot it a whole lot, maybe 100 - 200 rounds per year on average, mainly for target practice and shooting small game - I shot 1 raccoon with it and a few prarrie dogs this year. This yearIused a friends .17 HMR for prarrie dogs and it is AMAZING how accurate it is out to 150+ yards. WAY more accurate than my 10/22. I had one confirmed kill at 185 yards on my rangefinder. My .22 would have about a 3 foot drop at that yardage!

I recently purchased a Ruger single six revolver in .22 and .22 WMR so I now have that for the standard plinking and I think I could get a decent trade on my 10/22 toward a .17 HMR for prarrie dogs and raccoons out at that 100+ yard mark that my 10/22 struggles with. The revolver would be good for close in work. Of course I will lose the semi-auto feature but the .17 HMR is so accurate one shot generally does the trick and with ammo more expensive I would hate to just go popping off 10 rounds at a whack each time I decided to pull the trigger.

The only thought is that my son might some day be able to use the 10/22 and so I'm thinking I should maybe hold onto it. He is only 1 year old now, but I am hoping to have him plinking around in a few more years anyway. Not sure if the 10/22 would be a good choice for a young kid either. Maybe a cheap bolt action .22 is in the future when he gets old enough for it.

Just curious what others thoughts are on the subject.

Thanks, Nathan

I would save the .22 for Jr and get another .17 for now. Then you'll both have something to use when he gets of age. Nothing like having both!

I personally would keep the 10/22 and go buy a Savage 93r17...I own a 93r17 blued barrel with wanut stock and a heavy barrel. Its the most accurate little gun i have ever owned. I've shot many of animals out as far as 200 yards. You can get one very reasonably priced. I know they are right around $200 and they come with a 3x9x40 scope.

I have a 10/22 and a Savage 93R. It's simply amazing how accurate the Savage is. It's by far the most fun rifle I own to shoot. (Okay, so those are the only two rifles I own...)

The 93R is also a cinch to clean. Just pull the bolt out and clean the barrel. As it is bolt-action, the action itself does not get gunked-up...

keep that 10/.22 and buy another .17. My dad, my sister and I all have 10/.22s and we shoot them all the time. great for squirrel. Aslo pretty good for controlling the muskrat population on our lake haha. Its a great gun, and cheap to shoot and enjoy!

Or, you can convert your 10/22 into a 17hm2. You would need a barrel, a weighted cocking handle and or heavier bolt return spring. The 17 hm2 is a little slower than the HMR but worlds above a 22lr and ammo for the hm2 is a couple bucks a box less then the HMR ammo. Green Mountain has barrels made for the Ruger 96/22 that are a direct fit on a 10/22 for $65 andPower Custom bolt handle $55 add a box of shells for $5-$6 and your ready to shoot.

That is the last group I shot with the 17 HM2 barrel installed. 5 shots from 50 yds.

I have the exact same gun and it is scary accurate...I love it!
