What caliber for moose, elk, bear, deer
I'm placing my order for my graduation present and am wonderng what caliber gun will work for all 4 animals? I hope to someday be able to hunt all four and would love to do it with one gun. I'm looking at the Remington model 700's. I'm think about going with the .300 ultra mag or WSM. I don't think the .270 will quite cut it onmoose.

The 270 is a little small for Moose. 300 Mag, 300 WSM are on the top of my listbecause they could also be used asa deer rifle. Then i would get a 300 Ultra Mag, 338 Mag, 338 Ultra Mag if i wanted something bigger or 7mm Mag or 30-06 if i couldnt take the recoil of the 300 WSM or 300 Mag.

300 WM.
Though just about anything .308 and above will do the deed with proper placement and distance. Tom |

Go for the 300wsm use a light bullet for the deer because it could ba a little overkill at times and use a heavier grain for the bigger stuff.

I shoot Winchester Super-X 180gr Power Points in my 300 WSM. I use mine more for bear here in pa then deer. I live in a shotgun only are but go to the mountains for bear every year.

What caliber? Easy, .30 caliber. Remember claiber doesn't = cartridge. :D As for which cartridge which I'm guessing is the question that was intended, I'd say .30-06 or .308 just for ease of ammo availability. Myself, I prefer the less common chamberings and would opt for something along the lines of a .257 Roberts, .405 Winchesteror .300 H&H.

The gun you can shoot the best is the best. Other than the big bears (Brown/Grizzly) a 270/280 is excellent with little kick (therefore better shootability) compared to larger calibers especially mags. I also shoot a 257 Roberts and would use it for anything other than those big bears (Moose included). Lots of guys can shoot those big magnums...I'm not one of them. Most can't IMHO.

I would guess that more of thsoe animals have been taken with the 30-06 and 270 than all other calibers combined. Well I guess the 30-30 would be in that group as well. It the Huinter more than the tool.

Up here in Canada we shoot some of the hardest and heaviest animals, if you stick with just a plain 300 win mag its great. No need to go up from there for north america. And yes a .270 will take down a moose and fast! Used one for years and wish i had never gotten rid of it, best gun ive ever had. But no you definately dont need to go Ultra, standard mag is great , not sure about short mag, never shot one, but i think shells are quite a bit more for one.
