Default Wife bought me a Weatherby Vanguard, 257 Wthby Mag

She pulled up a wishlist I made a long time ago and bought me a 257 Wthby Mag!![8D]
It was a total surprise to me, she rocks.

I bought a Leupold VXI 4-12x40 scope and Leupold mounts and rings from Gander Mountain in Winchester, Virginia. What really surprised me was when he went to ring up the 3 boxes of ammo I was going to get he said it was $119.00 per box. [] I was stunned, it was 100 grain factory Weatherby TSX ammo. Needless to say I only bought 1 box as my back was to the wall and I needed some ammo for my trip to the range this Friday, had I not had that trip already planned out even before I knew I got this rifle, I would not have paid that much money for 1 box of ammo.

I have wanted this caliber for 20 years now, and I finally have it. I think my deer and varmint rifle collection is completed, I do not need another caliber in the 25 to 30 range that's for sure.

I can't wait to see how it shoots tomorrow and take it out next year for Opening day.

Great Rifle and Cartridge you probably won't need a rangefinder for that one ..sorry that Gander adminstered their typical screwing but you can buy that ammo for 1/3 of that price if you go to the right store. I am betting that is one very good shooting gun

The target that came with it sure had a tight group, I'll post up my results tomorrow whether they are good or not. My wife really hooked me up this year, she's a keeper.

All of these online stores sell ammo for 257 Wby Mag for a lot less than what you paid at Gander Mountain. Follow the third link and you'll find the same Wby 100gr TSX ammo for $51.66/box. Looks like Gander ripped you off. You'll have to pay a hazmat fee ordering ammo online, but it'll still be a lot less than $119/box. But that is the caveat of the Wby cartridges...they are costly compared to other cartridges.

If I had a rifle in any Wby cartridge handloading would be mandatory. Even with the expensive Wby brass (which is the excellent Norma brass packaged under the Wby brand name), you'll spend a fraction per box compared to factory ammo. For what you paid for your box of ammo, you could have very nearly put together a bare bones handloading setup and handloaded the 20 rounds yourself. That would be my suggested route to feed that Wby, expecially if you want to shoot it a lot. But, if you're planning on it being a one-box-per-year rifle, I'd probably just buy factory ammo.

Good luck and enjoy your new rifle. The .257 Wby is one heck of a cartridge, and with the TSX bullet I'd wouldn't hesitate to put one thru an elks boiler room.

Mike

Thanks, I'll be ordering 3 boxes of that this afternoon. I new they were ripping me off, but they had me by the b@lls because I needed a box for tomorrow and no place else near me carries it. [:@]

The TSX is definitely the bullet I want to stick with, at least at this moment in time.

That's a beautiful rifle, and an outstanding cartridge. Congrats!!!

One of the partners at my lawfirm has one of the Weatherby MOA's in .257 Wby Mag. But...I'm not a partner, and don't make the partner dinero... So, if I was getting a .257 caliber rifle, I'd have to stick with a .25-06 in order to be able to afford the ammo. I couldn't afford to shoot at a cost of over $50 per box...

Congrats on the gun!!!!

Now those ammo prices are asinine!! A great reason to handload!!!! Also if you don't NEED the tsx ammo should be cheaper! I dont use them for anything, Noslers in my fast guns seem to work just fine!
