Old nasty shotgun

I've got this oooold westernfield bolt action 12ga shotgun that my dad gave me. It's a full choke 2-3/4". It is a fine gun except that it miss fires alot. Also the bolt jams up. It stuck (like it was caught on something) twice today and missfired 4 times. The safety doesn't work on it and the clip jams and won't pop the shells up to be inserted into the barrel. Does anyone know what the problem may be with it? Other than the clip and safety. Just the missfires.

It's a shame too. The gun patterns very well, kind of. It patterns a foot low and to the right but it's tight.

When he first gave it to me I did manage to kill a deer with it. I've also got a few crows and a squirrel or two. Now that all the problems really started, it just sits all lonely in the corner.

RE: Old nasty shotgun

I've seen a few feeding/misfire problems in pumps and auto loaders caused by a dirty chamber. Outers (others prob too) sells a "chamber brush", basically a nylon brush on a short flexible handle. It is inserted into the chamber still on the action. Gets plastic fouling that keeps new shell from seating correctly, better than a reg. bore brush can, fixing many misfire problems. Either that or you' ve got something wrong on the firing pin end...? Chamber brush is a cheap cure... and handy to have anyway.

Well, it being a bolt action makes it very easy to clean. Everything is spotless. I think it is something wrong inside the bolt or like you said, maybe the firing pin.
