RE: Need Advice on New Gun!
I have 4 Marlin 336's all with scopes. One has an old Burris 4x, one has a Leupold VariX II 3-9, one has a Leupold VX II 2-7, and my favorite hunting gun has a Zeiss Conquest 3-9. I personally hate see-thru ring, but to each his own. There is alot of Marlin owners that view scoping a 336 as a cardinal sin, but for me to shoot past 25-30 yards, it is a must.
I want to recommend trying the Hornady LeverEvolution ammo in your new 30-30. I have gotten super accuracy on targets and great terminal performance on game. ![]() ![]() |
RE: Need Advice on New Gun!
The reason I do,and also reccomend that scope stay on bottom side of magnfication is simply in case of close/running/fast shots-your field of view will be largest and thus, easier to pick up deer in sight picture. If a deer is spotted at longer range,it'll usually be there long enough to zip scope power up-if it don't-you didn't have a good shot in 1st place. NOT a old wives tale.
ORIGINAL: The Rifleman Power turned down for hunting? I keep my scopes on 5x for hunting and turn them up a I need it. Keeping your scope as low as possible is also an old wives tale. All you have to do is sight it in at the range that you think that you are going to shoot and it will be just fine. There is no use sighting in a gun for 200 yards if you are only going to shoot 50 - 60 yards. That is how a majority of deer are missed each year. |
RE: Need Advice on New Gun!
Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'll be getting the scope mounted today without the see-through rings. Thanks again for the feedback!

RE: Need Advice on New Gun!
ORIGINAL: adam11082 The wife got me a Marlin 336 in .30-30 for x-mas. I love the gun, but here is the thing....It came with a scope. It's not mounted yet, I would have to take it back to where she bought it , and they would mount it for me and bore sight it. There is nothing on the scope, but I'm assuming it is a Tasco or Simmons. It's a 3-9X40 if it makes a difference.Iam just getting into rifles, I'm moreof a shotgun guy. I have a mosin nagant in 7.62x54r with iron sites that I hunted with this year with success. I don't have any rifles with scopes on them.I just don't know whether I should have the scope mounted or not? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Adam I am prejudiced. I think every rifle should have a scope, except for Kentucky/PA longrifles, Jaegers, and Hawkens. But a .30/30 does NOT need a 3X-9X, it needs a 2.5X or 3X; 4X at most, unless you plan to shoot chipmonks and gophers with it (something smaller & lighter than that scope you now have.) I would buy an old Weaver K-2.5 Series 60B off of e-bay for that rifle, or a Lyman All-American with a perma-centered reticle. No more power that 4X is needed..... |
RE: Need Advice on New Gun!
I agree with Retrieverman, I hate to see see-thru rings on a lever, but to each his own. I think in time you will probably ditch that 3-9x40 and go to a more compact scope like a 2-7x33. These factory included scopes are about the lowest of thelowest end scopes made. These larger scopes seem bulky on a levergun and make them feel top heavy, but thats only my opinion. Definatley try the LE ammo from Hornady. Accuracy is excellent and great knockdown power.
