RE: 22" Barrel vs 24" Barrel in a 25-06

The 25-06 is an overbore cartridge and theoretically should lose a great deal more velocity than it does when barrel lenght is reduced from 24" to 22". I have a S&W 1500 (Howa made for S&W years ago). My Dad has a Weatherby Vanguard (Howa made for Weatherby). S&W has a 22" tube and Vanguard has a 24" tube. Shooting 115 gr. Winchester Ballistic Silvertips over my chrony the 22" tube shoots 18 fps on average over the Vanguard. Many variables can come into play to make this possible. One of which would be internal dimensions and smoothness of the barrel interior. My Dad's gun is new and mine is over 20 years old. I've put hundreds of rounds through mine and Dad's has had maybe 50-60. However, handloads with RL22 & a 110 gr. Accubond give my Dad's gun about a 40 fps advantage.
