Savage Rifles
I'm looking at a Savage Model 11 in 243, it has the accutrigger, a free floating barrel and it sits on a blue gray laminate stock. It's really nice and priced at about $450. So I think it should be a nice little shooter but of course I look for any and all opinions on such things. And since there seems to be some good gun knowledge around here I'm asking.
Good deal? Good gun? |
RE: Savage Rifles
Depends what are you going to be hunting and where?
|
RE: Savage Rifles
I looked up some prices on the saveage 11 and 450 is a good price and Savage is a good gun. The .243 will be great on deer and shoot flat for a long way.
|
RE: Savage Rifles
for the $$$ you can't go wrong. Savage's are very accurate out of the box and the accutrigger is a great system. I have a 30-06 Model 111 and it has treated me awesome

RE: Savage Rifles
i'm not a big fan of the 243 for big bodied whitetails,i've seen to many get away. there are lots of better choices for big game.
ilike the 270 win for deer i have 3 savage rifles mod 11 7mm mod12 22-250 mod 110 22-250 savage rifles are very accurate out of the box.price sounds about right. |
RE: Savage Rifles
I'm not a fan of .243's for deer because I feel that initial blast of energy is vital in deer hunting and light bullets just don;t carry it.
But the modern Savage is a damned fine rifle, my buddies rifles are all .5 MOA's. |
RE: Savage Rifles
Shoot me an e-mail [email protected] and I'll give you a couple of 243 loads to start with that work well for your Coyotes and Deer.

Email sent. Thanks

RE: Savage Rifles
i own that same gun except it sits in a black syh stock shoots great put even crappy glass on top and she will shoot great accutrigger youll love the weight of it is heavy put i like it that way .243 is a great caliber for everything from groundhogs with 100 grain corelok no mess all the way to moose if you ask me
shoot 100grain corelok you dont need federals and winchesters $$$$$$$$stuff .243win |
RE: Savage Rifles
I've taken somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 deer with the .243 using Hornady 100 gr Interlock bullets and only had one needing a second shot. Heaviest was a dressed wt of 159 lb. If you like the rifle, and Savage are accurate reliable rifles, get it. If you have a choice though and want the short action, you would probably be better served with the same rifle in 7-08 or 308 for those big NE whitetails.

RE: Savage Rifles
My father had an excellent Savage 11 in .22-250 and the accuracy was excellent. Savage rifels have, in general, I think a well deserved reputation for OOB accuracy.
When I was younger and shot a lot, I could place 3 shot groups at 100 yardsthat could be covered by a nickel. Absolutely amazing, the accuracy held up very well out to 400+ yards. As regards the .243 as a whitetail round, while it doesn't have the bullet mass, the shock power alone is surely more than enough to kill? A 4000 FPS slug must hit like a freight train! Obviously if there's poor shot placement it won't be enough, but that's never the gun's fault be it a 7MM or a .243, it's the nut behind the stock that needs tightening in that case. Grouse |

I have never seen a savage that wasn't extremely accurate!

RE: Savage Rifles
The .243 Win will takeany deer in NA. There are 2 main things to remember whenusing the .243 Win for deer:
1.) Choose the correct bullet and bullet weight. Don't use a varmint bullet or a duel (varmint/deer) purpose bullet. If you reload, usethe betterpenetrating bullets like the Speer Grand Slam (100gr), the Nosler Partition (100gr), BarnesTSX (85gr), Scirocco II (90gr), and the likes. If you use factory ammo, stick to 100gr loads or loads that offer the bullets listed above. 2.) Pick your shot and shot placement carefully. It is critical that the shot placement be precise, especially with large bodied deer. Don't try to break major bones or shoot thruthe shoulders. A double lung or heart shot with a .243Win is devestating and will result in a clean kill, with short recovery. The Savage is a great rifle. No frills, no bells, and no whistles. Just a accurate, rugged, and dependable rifle. |
RE: Savage Rifles
stop with the bullet listings, the man just needs to shoot coreloks
100grain pill will do a hurting on those NE deer no matter what they say ive shot 150lb deer3year old deer that dont kick after a 100grain pill gose threw the top of the lungs 100 grain coreloks .243win |
RE: Savage Rifles
Not all .243 Winnie's like the 100gr Remington Coreloks
He will have to experiment with loads to findthat his particular rifle shoots accurately. If his rifle likes them and shoots them accurately enough to satisfy him, then great. If not he'll have to shoot a different load his rifle likes. |

I realize that, according theaccounts I read around here,I seem to be a statistical outlier. Still, I figured I needed to voice my experiences.I plan to contact the company, & see what they have to tell me. FC |

.243win
rem coreloks rock! i shoot them in my 30-06, .270 and .308 never had a problem with them that wasn't my own fault. had my first experience with a 243. i watched a buddy of mine shoot three deer this year. i was pretty impressed. i might have to add one to my collection. |
RE: Savage Rifles
I posted earlier...but failed to mention, if you wanna pull double duty for varmits and deer my vote goes to the 25-06....

RE: Savage Rifles
The 243 savage will fit the bill nicely for what you are using it for. I've killed 2 of those Nebraska deer with my 243, and probably 40-50 other deer with the lil 243, and I've only had one take a step. I worked up a max load pushing a 95gr Combined Technology BT, and they anchor deer very well. In fact, I shot one of those Nebraska mule deer at a lil over 400 yards.
For coyotes the best combination for a fur friendly load I have found is a 60gr Sierra HP @ 3600fps. Anchors 'em in their tracks, and will not exit with a rib-cage shot. If you hit the shoulder blade it could get ugly, but I've only had to throw out maybe a handful of coyotes shot with that load out of well over 100 dogs. In fact, here is my new coyote/backup deer gun: ![]() That coyote didn't like the 60gr pill yesterday ;) |
RE: Savage Rifles
cma3366a, what scope, rings, loads are you using? That thing is spraying all over. My Savage 116, 7mm, mag shoots 1" to 1.5" MOA all day.

RE: Savage Rifles
Sounds like your front scope base may be loose. Maybe the front screw bottoming out and feeling tight but the base still not secured to the action. Worth checking. It has happened quite often on that model Savage.

RE: Savage Rifles
ORIGINAL: cma3366a I wish there was something to blame other than the rifle in my instance, but there wasent. Checking that bases are tight to the actions, and the stock bolt are properly torqued is day one stuff, and it diddent make a bit of difference. |

RE: Savage Rifles
a 150lb whitetail is not what i call a 'big bodied deer' . on farms where i hunt thats not even the average.
i have spent many days helping friends track 200-250lb whitetails that were hitgood with a 243 and still didn't go down . i have found them miles away before they went down. i know lots of guys that thought the 243 was enough til they lost that 'once in a lifetime buck' and bought something bigger. i would buy a caliber that shoots aleast a 125-130 grn bullet. you will get faster kills with more bullet weight. i don't like the big over kill guns either but you need enough to get the job done. |
RE: Savage Rifles
A .243 is good, but it's on the "light" end of the deer rifles. Accurate shot placement is a must and you'll have venison steak. [8D]
I am a .30 caliber fan and have a classic older Savage 110 in a .308 that is awesome. It is lethally accurate at 100 yards and/or more. I also have an even older Marlin 30AS .30-30 with open sights that I use for close brush hunting. But given the choice, I grab the .308 and hit the woods/field edges. |
