Ammo prices are about to make reloading a cost-saving enterprise once more. Even though the price of bullets and powder is up again, the brass case is still about 75% of the cost of a round of ammo-and people who use factory ammo only throw that away! |

Shop at another store or buy thru the mail. Gander mountains pricing plain sucks and they will stick it to their customers everytime. They are a total ripoff. |
RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
That's exactly why I am getting an entire reloading set up for Christmas.
It's not the dealers trying to make a big buck either. Dealer cost on regular ole Remington Core Lokt is aproaching $20 a box. |
RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
Wait until you look at shot for reloading shotguns. I went up to the new Cabelas in Reno a few weeks ago, and a 25 pound bag was almost $50 !!!!!!!

Dealer cost on regular ole Remington Core Lokt is aproaching $20 a box I am a reloader and have been for awhile but I sometimes like to buy good stuff from the rack and cheaply. I think I have been in my local ganders a few times in the last few months and I usually walk out with a magazine(to read). |
RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
Whileit is common and much-dicussed knowledge thatprice of raw materials, namely lead and copper, have moved higher, I think the retailers like Gander Mountain are using that as an excuse to hike prices way, way, way up.
In general, I find my local Gander's prices to be absolutely laughable. Used guns in particular are priced at joke-like levels. All I can say is ther must be a lot of suckers out there who are willing to pay $485 for a used Tikka in .308 that's beat to hell and has no scope. Come on! Their ammo prices are sometimes competitive, but many times they're10-25% higher. You really have to know what the price is at other places or you'll get ripped off. Luckily, Sportsman's Warehouse has moved in literally across theroad, sothere is now another option and hopefullythe competition will inject a little reality factor intothe prices at Gander. Grouse |

Whileplacing an order at Natchez shooting supply todayI noticed they have an ammo price increase warning(5-25% price increase) to take effect in January 2008. http://www.natchezss.com/

RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
One angle to consider is that ammo keeps pretty well, and probably will never get cheaper. Buy or load a lifetime supply, and sit there and smile while everyone else bitches.
|
RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
This is exactly why I reload and cast a lot of my own bullets
|
RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
We have been seeing this coming for over a year...I bought a case of CoreLokts from WalMart for my .243 at $13.88 a box last year...They have gone up to $14.24...Part of the problem as well is that .260, it costs more to set up the line to load just a few boxes...A more common caliber will save you money because of the economy of scale...

RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
The metal market has been real crazy the last year and a half or so....
Some retailers are just capitalizing on that, some aren't.....As far as manufacturers go it seems that remington is passing the most cost on...where you see it the most is in super premium non - toxics....tungsten has gone out of this world in price. |

ORIGINAL: waiting_for_a_gift One angle to consider is that ammo keeps pretty well, and probably will never get cheaper. Buy or load a lifetime supply, and sit there and smile while everyone else bitches. I've started buying reloading components in lots of 1000 ormore when it comes to stuff like bullets and primers. Since I handload, I wouldn't go so far as to stockpile loaded ammo, but the components are worth it. It doesn't take a lot of space to store 10,000 bullets, so why not? I figure if I don't use them, I can always sell what's left, I mean it's not like the market for .223 bullets is going to dry up. Or brass, there's almost always going to be a market for brass. Powder is one where I'm not going to stock up too much because I like to play with different loads. If I know I'm going out prarie dog shooting, I sometimes will buy a bigger jug of one kind of powder because I'll use a good part of it just reloading the ammo that I shot. Beyond that I don't see any reason to keep a ton of powder around. Grouse |
RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
another thing to consider ,i look for democrates to get in office ,and they may make it harder to powder in the future.
|
RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
Seems like every shooting or outdoor catalog that sells ammo has a disclaimer about the price of ammo going up.
Glad I started reloading but now it's time to get another press and start loading for rifles too. |
RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
What's the reason ammo prices are going up?

RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
one word guys just one word to explain the ammo cost
WAR we are fighting two of them look at history when were fighting wars ammo gun gas all metal prices and most other stuff we use in the us go up during world war 2 everything went up Vietnam everything went up Korea and when the cold war was over ammo and gun price went down because of all the surplus from the us and Russia when the wars are over the prices will go down if the wars end the way things are going were headed toward ww3 unless a Dem gets into office then we are just headed toward a world with out the US |
RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
For those who keep asking why ammo prices keep going up, I explained it....
Metal prices. The war and some tightened mining BS and China controlling all tungsten mining, etc etc etc... |
RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
Just saw the alltime high amount charged for a 30-06 cartridge(you know the one that isn't good enough for anything anymore and is a has been) Federal Premium Vital Shok 180 grain MRX bullet. 69.99 at you guessed it my local Gander(if I wore a mask if would be a thief)Mountain. I almost pulled over one of the knowledgeable sales staff when I saw that but I said to self Nah you don't want to drive your Blood pressure any higher.

Lead prices have increased dramatically, from about $500 USD per US ton in 1998, to about $2500 per ton today. And in 1996/early 97 in particular, lead prices spiked at almost $4000 per ton! Copper prices have followed the same track. On this date in 1998, CU was selling for about $1600 per ton. Today it closed at $6,629 per ton in London. Both lead and copper are common industrial materials. This issue of the impact of the Iraq war's impact on these commodity prices is practically zero. I can't find an exact figure, but muntions manufacturing does not even appear as one of the top 100 industries that consume copper. At a guess, I'd say on a fraction of a fraction of the world's CU supply goes into ammo every year. Like oil, the prices are rising because the demand is rising. China's oil consumption doubled in the last 3 years. There are predictions it could double again in the next year and a half. It's not the suppy going down, it's the amount of demand chasing the same supply. Grouse |
RE: Ammo prices...Yikes
ot sure about ton price but the local scrap yard is giving 1 dollar a pound for cobber which is double what it was a year ago
