Default Help- Ruger M77- 7mm

Lost...

Hey guys, Noob here. So I'm 35 years old and live in Florida. I went deer hunting with my father in West Virginia for several years as a kid (12-16 years old.) recently I came to really miss hunting and decided to go back to my fathers and get some of my rifles to do some hunting with some friends here in Florida...

Well I think the primary rifle I went and got maybe a bit oversized for the deer here in Florida but wanted to get some opiions as I know little to nothing about this gun nor what type of ammo I should purchase...

I have a Ruger M77 7mm rifle... Just got it outfitted with a Bushnell Elite 4200 scope... can anyone give me some pointers as to what kind of rounds I should be looking at purchasing or share some wisdom on this rifle?

Thanks!

Buy some cheap Remington Core-Lokts and shoot em up. If they shoot good out of your rifle then they are more than good enough for deer.

Any over the counter ammo will work. For deer, a 139-150 grain bullet should be plenty.

You have the wrong rifle-please send it to me right away so that you won't be tempted to blow up any fla deer.

Ruger 77 with a 4200 elite on top? Nice rig. Haveone myself.

I'm assuming it's a 7mm remington mag and not a 7mm-08. Some might feel that the 7 mag is too big for deer, but I like it. It's a flat shooting, hard hitting round and it should be able to take down just about everything in North America shy of grizzly/brown bears.

Maybe try different brands (and bullet weights) to see what your gun likes best. Pretty much any weight offered in 7 mag will take down deer, though. I shoot reloads in mine, but prior to that I always had good luck with Federal.I really like Hornady ammo, though.

i have heard that the deer down in florida are a little smaller bodied than the one up north. if i were buying factory ammo i would go with some 140 gr ammo and the bullet that your gun shoot best. i have the same gun and use 150 gr winchester supreme ballistic tips here on the whitetails in kentucky. so i recomend the 140 grain for you due to to smaller bodies and just choose an ammo that your gun shoot accurately. have fun with it and good hunting, i love my ruger 7mm and it loves putting bucks on the ground and im sure you will to.

Just buy some light grain core-locts of the managed recoil and have at it.

Why use managed recoil ...Deleted by CalHunter... and want less out of his 7 mag?
I believe at 200 yards the MR loads still have over 1600 lbs of energy. Without speaking for RugerM77 I think he is referencing that with the MR loads you will still have a very powerful gun, plenty enough for a whitetail and yet have half the recoil.

Just because someone would prefer to shoot a load with less recoil I wouldn't categorize them a sissy
