.308 ammo
Time to pick up my 1st few boxes of .308 ammo. Will be shooting my new Ruger Frontier rifle. Uses of this rifle are Hogs & Deer here in Florida. Whatwould you suggest on over the counter, easy to acquire ammo.

RE: .308 ammo
I've gotten great accuracy in a couple rifles out of the Federal Premium with both the 150 grain Nosler balistic tip and 165 grain Sierra btsp loadings.

I've done some hog hunting around here...you think the ballistic tip is a good bullet to use on hogs, given the bone structure? |
RE: .308 ammo
150 Grain Remington Core Loct as long as they shoot good out of your rifle.

RE: .308 ammo
.308 ammo? I agree with the suggestion on Federal Premium ammo. That's all I use with my Savage .308 bolt action. Everything from the cheap target rounds (American Eagle) to the best Nosler Ballistic Tip rounds.
You just have to see what flavor of .308 ammo your Ruger Frontier will like. Federal, Winchester, Remington, Hornady, etc... |
RE: .308 ammo
IMO a Nosler BT is a bad choice for hogs. I love a BT bullet for deer but would want something a little tougher and designed to give penatration. A Nosler Partition or a Barnes bullet would be my pick.

RE: .308 ammo
See, this is why i asked :Ddifferent opinions! since i have the chance to see either huntingat any given time, i need something that is effective for both. Thanks for the info and look forward to hearing more opinions.

RE: .308 ammo
Black Hills Gold if you can find it. Their premium hunting round crossed with their nearly unbeatable accuracy. There are others out there too. Just my reccommendation

RE: .308 ammo
We use 165 grain bullets in ours. If you are wanting it for hogs any well constructed bullet will work. Ballistic tips will work but we prefer not to use them on hogs.

Just my reccommendation I'm guessing you're talking about fairly short to moderate ranges down there in FL.....so yeah, I'd probably start with the premium core-lokts and see how they shot...and then move up the price range. No use in spending 40 bucks a box on Winchester XP3's when a 18 buck box of core-lokts will shoot better and kill things just as dead. |
RE: .308 ammo
Actually, my .308 likes the 150 Core-Locts better than the expensive stuff! It is definately worth a try.
|
RE: .308 ammo
Get the core-Lokts they will be all you need. They are one of the most tried and true boxes of ammo out there.
|
RE: .308 ammo
My 308 loves the Remington 150 grain corelokts for factory ammo, and they work great on deer.

RE: .308 ammo
I shoot the Federal Fusion 165grain out of my CVA Optima .308 and it shoots great, but they are right that it is hard to beat a core lock.
|
RE: .308 ammo
Funny, I wasn't going to post it- but since others have- My .308 Striker shoots core lokts accurately as well.
I'm wanting to switch to fusions for my next rifle in order to pick up more down range energy (according to the charts). Problem with fusions in no one carries them locally like the core lokts. |
RE: .308 ammo
Well i picked up a couple boxes of Hornady 150gr. SST and was very pleased with the range results. Sightingmy Ruger Frontier .308in for the first time at 100 yrds., i was able to manage 1&1/2" groups. Only a couple flyers out to 2"..this was before my time ended and i was ushered out for the next guy to shoot lol. Guessing if i had a bit more time i could have tightened it up a little more. Anyone had any experience with this round?

RE: .308 ammo
Why would anyone shoot a ballistic tip for deer or hogs?
|
RE: .308 ammo
As for BT's, some like um, some dont. Horror stories were the norm a few years back but today i think its developement has increased its popularity. I have shot then from other rifles without any issues and these have all been shots inside 100 yrds. which was one of the horror stories that theycrumble at high velocity, at short range upon impact. My friend will use nothing but BT's for hogs/deer and he has yet to lose any of them. Then again my other hunting buddy says he would never look at them twice LOL...

RE: .308 ammo
SST's are not a "true" ballistic tip bullet anyways...
|
RE: .308 ammo
Guess i should say/clearify its not "the true ballistic tip" trademarked by Nosler.
