the .270 was the first rifle I bought myself when I turned 18. I did not like it. i had too many bad experiences with it. to many deer being wounded and not dropping. it cant be blamed on shot placement because they were all shoulder shots. i was beginning to believe that mule deer were made of steel.

if the 7/08 is the twin to that I will stay away from it and get the .308

Its your money..perhaps u'd be better served with a 416 Rem...

Two years ago Ikilled Nine big mule deer with nine shots with the 270 and 130 grain Federal fusions. I am sorry but if you can't kill a deer with a 270, don't blame the gun. The 270 has killed every species of game in North America and most of the Game in Africa. The 7MM-08 is in about the same class with a small edge going to the 270 IMO if only because of the slightly bigger casing.

I agree with the NO shoulder shot on deer, there is no better way to ruin meat and leave yoursel a tracking job than a direct shoulder shot. That is unless it a very high shoulder shot and messes up the spine.

I guess I will blame the caliber on the wounded deer, I sure wont take the blame. I always go for the high shoulder shot, thats the way I was taught to shoot deer. I know dead is dead but I hate tracking lung shot animals. The .270 just was not good for me. I have no doubt abouts its history, its just not for me. From my personal experience, I had a lotbetter results with my 6mm on deer than with the .270.

I used my cousins Waetherby 7mag once for deer season cause my 243 win. f***** up. The recoil is not bad at all compared to the calibers that you have right now.:DBut that 7mag did awesome on the 8 point that I killed during youth.

Well, I agree with sometimes having to track lung/heart-shot deer. I have had to do it sometimes. They may go as far as 30-40 yds. Just a terrible ordeal.

The 7-08 is a great cartridge for deer sized game and is more than capable of taking black bear, elk, etc. Like the previous posts said. As much as I hate to admit it, it will do anything the 270 can (Sorry Jack Oconnor). I have 2 7-08s and love them both as much as my .270.

You have to take the blame...bullet placement is up to the shooter.
If you dont have confidence in a particular cartridge, thats fine dont use it. I will not hunt deer with a 243 but to say thatthe 270 is to blame instead of your shot placement is pure BS

I have a .338 Win Mag, and Rem 280, bothBrownings. I picked up a Savage Model 11FYCAKYouth,7mm-08 for my 9 year old twins, and am I impressed! It has the adjustable muzzle brake which reduced the recoil by 30% for the kids, which is great. I was most impressed with it's accuracy and low recoil. Savage offers an adult stock at cost, which I am going to order, I like my other rifles, but this little bullet is a blast to shoot, and packs a punch. I loaded up the nosler 140gr Accubond, and have no complaints. I was pleasantly suprised at the quality Savage put into this rifle. Everything works smooth as silk, and the blue job is excellent.
