What cartridge for what range??
Well, this has probably been done before, but for the sake of some of our newcomers, let's do it again.
1). What gun/cartridge comb. is best for up to say 70 yds. in thick woods? 2). Same as above, but now what is best for 0-200 yds., various backrounds? ( Woods, open areas, etc.) 3). What do you recommend for 150-350 yds., mainly open ground? We're talking deer-sized game here, whitetail, mulies, antelope. Let's hear your suggestions............... |

30-06, bolt

RE: What cartridge for what range??
Remington 700. Pretty much anything from .243 to .338 Win Mag. will effectively kill deer at the ranges and under the conditions you describe.

RE: What cartridge for what range??
#1. Lever gun in what ever cartridge you choose. I am partial to the 444 Marlin.
#2. Ruger frontier or Steyr scoutin 7mm-08, .308, .376 Steyrwith a low power, variable, extended eye relief scope mounted foward over the barrel. #3.Standard bolt gunis something like a 7mm-08, 25-06, .270 etc with a 3-9X40 mounted low over the receiver. |
RE: What cartridge for what range??
My personal opinion
1. Lever action30-30. (Marlin) 2. Bolt Action 30-06. 3. Bolt Action .270 or 25-06. |
RE: What cartridge for what range??
1. lever in 35 rem with open sights
2. Light weight Bolt in 35 whelen, 30-06 with fixed 4 or 2-7 power scope 3. Medium to heavy Bolt in 6mm-06, 25-06, 270, 308, 7mm rem mag,etc with 3-9 or 4-14 powerscope and bipod |
RE: What cartridge for what range??
Any of the 308/30-06 class cartridges in a remchestersavage will work bestfor any of those situations.
I don't buy into the notion that a levergun is better at shorter ranges than a bolt gun chambered in a superior cartridge. |
RE: What cartridge for what range??
I agree Briman, but a short barreled open sight lever gun can be pretty handyin a short range situation. The carbines swing real nice in a treestand or in tight quarters. Isn't the goal to convince the spouse you NEED another gun to hunt with because ......................

RE: What cartridge for what range??
ORIGINAL: RugerM77.270 My personal opinion 1. Lever action30-30. (Marlin) 2. Bolt Action 30-06. 3. Bolt Action .270 or 25-06. Sounds as good as any to me |
RE: What cartridge for what range??
Model 1886 Winchester in 45-70. 0-200 yards-no problem. Over 200 IMO the minimum is 30-06. Faster magnum's are better.
How can some of you guy's rate the 30-06 good to 200, then rate a lighter cartridge and bullet better past 200?? Tom. |
RE: What cartridge for what range??
Anything that will work at 350 will work at 70, so you may as well just use what works at 350 and be prepared for anything out to 350...
Works for me... DM |
RE: What cartridge for what range??
A CZ 500 American in a 6.5x55 sewd or in the .260 rem. for the last 2 listed. But for the 0-70 in thick woods thing ur going to want to have some thing that can kill them really no matter where you hit them and thats can plow through some haevy brush. In that case the .300 win. mag.
