Help, considering 280rem over 270win
 

time to buy a new rifle, i've been using my dads old Savage 110 in 270 and its a nice gun but im looking at a Remminton 700 in.280rem ive noticed that the ammo selection for the 280 is no where near the selection of the 270 but i like to be the one with something different and i dont know anyone who uses a .280rem so what i'm asking is justhow good a cartridge is the 280 onelk (i know it will drop adeer clean) any tips will help, thanks

The 280 will certainly work on elk.Think of it as a 7mmremag but with about 200fps less velocity.I prefer the 280 over the 270win on elk as it gives the option of using heavier bullets.

One of my hunting partner uses a .280 rem for deer, elk and moose, he's has no problem tagging animals.Now reloads after Speers stopped making Nitrex ammo he was without a 160gr offeringwith OTC ammo(his preference for larger then deer in the .280), so left little choice but to buy dies and start reloading. IMHO it is a good reloader cartridge,as most of the factory loads are geared towards deer and sell it short. That said their are options available if you don't want to shoot the heavier for cal. bullets; ie 150gr Nosler part.

You may want to consider a 7mm rem mag if elk are regular quarry and you have no plan or access to reloading. Popular so factory ammo is readily available with more bullet/gr choices.

Both .284 caliber cartridges IMO/E are better then a .277 when it comes to game larger then deer. BTW I own and have usedboththe 7mm rem mag and 270win for antelope to moose.

Almost everyone I've ever heard of who owns a .280 is in freakin' LOVE with it. In reality, you won't see ½ a red ____ hair's worth o' difference vs. a .270. If you like to "roll your own" ammeaux, go for the .280. Otherwise the .270 would do you just as well in the field, and you could buy factory ammo in every persuasion imagineable.

If you want that .280, get it - obtaining new guns is always fun! But in practical terms, there is no discernible diff betwixt the two. Anything the .280 will do, the .270 will do just as well, with cheaper & much easier-to-find ammo.

If your a handloader then get a 280 if not look at the 270 win or 7mm rem mag. All peas in a pod and I would choose a 7 rem mag over all of them.

Go with the .280,you wont be dissappointed.Ijust tagged my 34th deer with it last week in P.A.I shoot 140 grain ballistic silvertips out of it and they have never let me down.

The 280 is an excellent round. My all time favorite Deer cartridge. It is more than adequate for elk out to 300 yards.

FYI you should never compare anything to the 270 on this board. The 270 Fanatics have short man's disease. They take exception to any comment. I have both a 270, and 280 plus several others in my safe. The 280 see a lot of action while the 270 never does. As a matter fact the 270 is about the be sacrificed to build my new 25-06 AI. Sorry 270 fans I'm sure many of you will lose sleep tonight knowing that I'm ruining a perfectly good rifle.[8D]

my uncle shoots a .280, a .270, and a .260, all remington's... he shoots the .280 the least of the bunch, primarily a back-up gun for him, uses the .260 the most as most shots he takes are in the sub-200 range... when he's somewhere with 200+yd shots he takes the .270... i shot his 280 this year just for giggles, i liked it, nice gun, but wouldn't trade my 7mag for it... .270 would be my choice personally....

Remington offers more Bullet selections up to 150gr for the .270 and Not many bullet choices in .280, but offer a 165gr.. If I had to choose, I would choose .270 cause of the better bullet selection. JMO

280 barely outperforms 270 bullet for bullet in energy and flatness of shot. Not a big difference really though. However, as previously stated, larger bullets are more available for 280, but far greater selection for 270. A 270 works on elk, so its a safe bet. but really look into the ammo available for both, and if you see a larger 280 round you feel you'd like, it may be a little better for elk.

Hey let's not let common sense get into the equation. I guess everyone goes thru a 270/280/7mm Rem mag progression. I went thru the 7x57/270,280/7 remmag/270wsm/7wsm/7saum progression and out of all of them I like the 7 saum and the 7 wsm even though you can[t find the ammo on shelves at times. Seems that everytime no matter where I go looking for ammo I find 270Win and 7mm Rem mag. Your mileage may vary

Of the two, I'd go with the .280 just because it's less common than the .270. As others have mentioned, though, you may as well step up to the 7mm Rem Mag if you're planning on going after elk.

That's what I meant is a wider availability of bullets for reloading. rebel hog-I said bullets-NOT cartridges. Ammo manufacturers don't sell bullets-bullet manufacturers and bullet making departments of ammo companys do. There's a difference between bullet,and cartridge.

The PERFECT projectile I've found works GREAT for deer,elk,boar,moose,and anything else I choose to shoot. The only TRUE all round projectile that if properly placed,will kill anything! It weighs 420 gr and is shot from my mathews switchback xt.

Count me in that group. I have both and have used both. I love my 280 and almost never take my 270 out of the safe anymore.

Since there is pretty good overlap with the 270 and 280, why no go 30-06. Same platform, and you can go up to 220 grain bullets. I had a 270 and a 280. The only difference I could see was the difference in available ammo and prices. Sold the 280 and am now looking for a 30-06.

Here's the definitive skinny: Jack O'Connor, Godfather of the .270 Win., the man who did more to popularize the .270 Win. than any other one person, once candidly admitted that the .280 Remington was a better cartridge than the .270!! This was mainly due to being able to shoot the same weight bullets faster than the .270, and also being able to shoot heavier bullets than the .270 does. It's a shame thatto realize this greatpotential, you have to load ammo for it because of the poor factory selections-same as for the 7X57mm Mauser round!

Fred Huntington, founder of RCBS, (a man who knew a little bit about guns!!) selected the .280 round forhis ONLY rifle for North American big game. I value his opinion. If you are a handloader, there are far and away more .284"/7mm bullets available from all over the world than there are .277" bullets.
