Most of my woods hunting is done with a model 7 308 and honestly I have not seen any difference in terminal performance at close ranges. The Marlin 336 I have is also very accurate at 100 yds with factory corelockt bullets.

CB
True. At the ranges at which most whitetail are taken, a 30-30 kills them as just as dead and just as quick as a 30-06, 308, 270, 280, 7mm08, etc etc etc...

I don't like the 30-30, I don't like leverguns, and I don't have much use for a levergun in a handgun cartridge. If I wanted to limit myself to a cartridge and gun with similar capabilities to a win-94 in 30-30, I'd use a SKS in 7.62x39. I guess I'm not sentimental, a traditionalist, or like to do things the way 'granddad did them':D

When did this become a 30-30/levergun bashing thread?

would you reccomend a 30/30 or a .44 mag for short range deer hunting?
Neither one. I'd prefer the .35 Remington to either of those two........

He's not bashing anything, he just doesn't like levers or the 30-30. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. I'm not sure what he means by limiting himselfto a cartridge or a gun but I'm sure he has his reasons. I like the 30-30 and for the type of hunting I do it fills the bill.

Me too. But between the 30-30 and 44 mag. I'd do this- If I had a 44 mag. handgun that I also used for hunting, I'd go with a Marlin in 44 mag. and use the same ammo in the two Ifnot, I'd go with aMarlin in 30-30.I'd use either one. [/align]

RE: 30/30 or .44

my opinion: out of the guns i have, if i had to choose one rifle to keep for deer hunting, it would be my marlin 30/30. at short ranges 100 yards or less it is extremely effective. im shooting winchester superX 150 gr. hollow points, and on a bench it shoots 1" groups at 100 yards, and only cost $15 a box. im not sure how the.44 would wade a little brush, but i know the 30/30 will do it. so if it was me i would get the 30/30...but none of us can decide for you, we can only provide you with our opinions and experiences with the calibers you mentioned....hope it helps

Looks like that pig is smiling. Perhaps that .30-30 tickled, and he laughed himself to death...

I have both, and out of the 2, the 30/30 is more accurate at longer distances. But under 100 yards, I feel that the 44 would be the better gun if forced to use it for anything larger than a deer, it just makes a bigger thud. Both are cheap to shoot and are time proven designs that have been around for many many years.

Ditto on this one. I've had both, but I still have the 30/30....guess that's my answer.
