Fit and feel are the most importantconsiderations imho whenselecting a firearm, so I suggest you need to handle them both and see what you like best.

I prefer the 700 personally because of:
Fit/feel
Trigger and adjustability
Non Mauser action
Aftermarket products more plentiful for 700vs M77

Though what I or others think in reality means squat if you don't agree. Both are good rifles and have legions of supporters. You need to choose which group yo join. I am willing to bet after some touch time you will find favor in one over the other.

Good Luck

They chamber the .280 in both the ruger and remington rifles i mentioned. This is the first year they made it in the LSS mountain rifle.I have one in the blued, wood model 700 mountain rifle but i want an all weather gun.

I've been shooting my Remington 700 mountain rifle in 280 for more than 25 years now... Of course Rem. wasn't making them back then, so i had to buy a new 700, gut it, and make my own...

The new 700 mountain rifle i looked at a few weeks ago, looked to be well made, and a very nice rifle... I've always liked 700's better than Ruger 77's, and i've also found the700'sto be more accurate too...

Buy what YOU like best!

I like the looks of the Remington '07 anniversary model in black laminate. If you're not on a strict budget I've been looking at Cooper of Montana's Model 52. They have it in .280 and I believe you can get it in the Jackson Hunter which is a synthetic ss set-up with a 3 shot 1/2 moa guarantee (granted a handload but still...). Suggested MSRP is around $1500.

I have shot a ruger 77 for 25 years in several calibers I like the mauser actions and the new ones are comming with adjustable triggers. I like the three position safety compaired to Remington's two the are both positioned in the sme area also. I would give the ruger a good look if you can find one in your caliber.

I am a Ruger fan also.I think that the M77 is as good as any rifle in its class.

The only problem I've ever had between a Ruger M77 and a Remington 700 is that I've had extractor failures with the Remingtons. Both seem adequately accurate and both seem to be nicely finished. Some of the Remingtons are very nice rifles. I especially like the Model 7's, but of course, they don't come in .280. I prefer the old M77's that have tang safeties. That's the best possible place to put thesafety-that's why I prefer the Ruger No. 1's and doubles!

The remington 700 has a good reputation for out of box accuracy HOWEVER since I'm a ruger fan,and the fact that you can buy the ruger and have gunsmithing work done and be out the same money.

i refuse to slam the ruger (or any other gun for that matter) cuz i know that, for the most part, any of the top tier manufacturers make top notch gear now days... i've never had a failure out of a Rem700, they fit me well and i've had great success with them... i've had my current BDL now for about 17yrs (maybe more, i think) and my dad has had his since about '74, both have been perfectly reliable and as accurate as I could hope for... to date i'm batting 1.000 on my hunting shots with this gun, seriously, i've never missed a shot in the field... at the range is a different story though as i've put down many more rounds there, but where it counts the Rem700 hasn't let me down... it is clear to me that i'll probably never own a different brand of rifle as i'm perfectly content with my 700... but this is what you need to get to, pick the one you are most comfy with, its the one you'll love to pick up and you'll be happy shooting it for years to come... having one that has aftermarket support is important to a degree if you plan on doing mods like trigger work and etc.... in that regards its tough to fault the Rem700 or the Winchester Mdl70, two of the most popular guns ever made

I own three Ruger 77s in 30/06, 7mm-08, and 7 mag. Great quality and value for the money.
