wel i am buying a shotgun i was looking at the maverick and mossberg 500 here is what i found the maverick is a 500 the diff is the maverick is a cheaper gun madewith cheaper parts thats what the guy at gander sad they have the mossberg 500 black systhatic for 199.00 the maverick is like 20 bucks less the safty is on the trigger not on the back of the reciever the barrels can be either 500 or the 88from what i have been told the 88 is a good gun just made with cheaper parts my thought at first thought was it was a 500 with a differnt gun so they could sell it cheaper but not from what i was told the guy at gander said for te little extra go with the 500 as that is my plan next friday

I have one. I think I paid something like $170 for it at Wal-Mart. Not the best looking rig out there, but I don't do much bird hunting so when I got it I just wanted something to get me by. That was about 5-6 years ago and I haven't ever had a single problem with it. It's not a bad gun at all. It'll definitely give you more than your money's worth out of it.

"thats what the guy at gander sad", no ofense but that would be enough for me to buy the maverick. I've met a gander mountain associate yet that was worth his/her salary. By the way I have had a maverick for about 10 years now its great!

RE: mossberg maverick??

It's seems to be a decent shotgun for a tight budget. My neighbor owns one, and I've seen him put about 300 rounds through it since Sep with no issues. When I shot it seemed sloppy compared to my Nova and my 870, but it appears to do it's job quite well.

RE: mossberg maverick??

The Maverick is basically a clone of the Mossberg 500 and is made in Texas, the company is owned by Mossberg.

The differences are they only come in black synthetic with painted receivers and blued barrels. They have a different trigger group with the safety in the trigger guard, they are not interchangeable with the 500's. Most of the other parts are though. They only come with one choke, where as the 500 comes with three.

And most of the parts are made out of the country (Mexico I believe) and assembled in Texas. These things mean a lower production cost, which leads to lower retail prices.

The Mossberg 500 comes with a tang mounted safety, wood furniture options and more options on metal finish and types. They are manufactured and assembled in the U.S. and like I said come with three chokes instead of one.

And as a side note the Remington 870 only comes with one choke as well.

sloppy compared to a nova thats news to me. I like the mavericks but stay clear of those novas or shall i say toy material. Italy needs to leave the pumps to americans.

Mossberg mavericks a good gun for the money. Where do you like your safety at is the only thing to choose from the 500 and maverick.

Where was your source, walmart? You need to get new sources from what I have heard people telling you.

I just told you what the differences are two posts up. Search engines are great, yahoo and google work great;).

I would quit listening to the dude at walmart, not saying they are all that way, but this guy seems to be feeding you a lot of bad information.

And by the way, the mossberg rep will lie, or leave things out in order to make their product look better.

RE: Mossberg maverick??

you are properly right Paul i did a search and wikapidea said basically the same thing but did not say where they were made but said there assb. in Texas one note my box for my 500 says for repair send to maverick address then Texas
it says nothing about conn. were the 500 is made but it is a 500 and says Mossberg 500 on the stick for shipping so who knows should get a response from Mossberg in a day or to but i expect it will the same as wikapidia and five other sights i got the same exculpation

mossberg emaild me back they said this

Thank you for your e-mail. The difference between both is the trigger, the safety and the forearm. The Maverick 88 has the safety on the trigger and the model 500 has the trigger in the receiver and the forearm of the Maverick has one /two dual bars. Thank you. i asked afetr getting there response where are the parts made and where are they assembled

Huh....I've got a Mossberg 500 that I'd always assumed was the Maverick model....I got it at Wal-mart for 149.99, it has a 7 shot tube and cylinder bore barrel....safety is the typical position on the back of the reciever. It's been a great gun , I've put hundreds of rounds through it with no problems. It's my under-the-bed home defense shotgun.
