Good shotgun for newbie
This year I had to borrow a 16 gauge that wasnt sighted in for me. I missed an 8 point because of this[:@]. Anyway I am an avid bowhunter that wants to get the most field time possible. I have never owned a shotgun before. So not sure what kind/size would be good for both deer and turkey. Not looking for anything to expensive to start with. Although I would like a pump. Any input would be great! Thanks

RE: Good shotgun for newbie
Either a Remington or a Mossberg would be a good choice. You can get both of them in some kind of a combo that will have a smoothbore barel for turkeys and whatever else you would shoot birdshot or buckshot at and a rifled slug barel for hunting big game. I have a Mossberg 835 turkey gun and bought a rifled slug barel with cantilever scope mount on it and it works great for deer with a 3x-9x scope on it.

RE: Good shotgun for newbie
I would recommend a Remington pump as well. Either way I can help you out in getting a shotgun right for your needs if you would like. I have several very nice used and new single shots, pumps and semi-auto 12 and or 20ga. e-mail me at [email protected] and we can discuss options.

dependson your budget i bought my first shotgun a few years ago a mossberg 500 turkey gun used
there a easy gun to use great for afirst time shooter and next friday i am heading to gander mountain and buying another but new this time it is a 500 all purpose field gun smoothbore cost 199 dollars new you wont get a better gun for anthese orevenclose to that there i s a mossberg maverick for a little less it s the same thing as the 500but alittle cheapper parts from what i was told you wll not fine a500 owner who does not love it |
RE: Good shotgun for newbie
Yes you will. I had one and liked it, but if you look you will always find someone that doesn't like something;). While the 870 and 500 are pretty similar there are differences that some prefer more than the other.

I have a 835 and my dad has a 500 and we both love them. I do know one person that dosnt like Mossbergs but its all because he screwed up. He lost the choke tube in the woods and missed a shot on the biggest gobbler he has ever seen. Other then that the gun has never been a problem.

ORIGINAL: Rebel Hog Rem 870 "Combo".......... Can't go wrong with an 870, and the combo gun will cover the majority of hunting you'll ever likely do. Mike |
RE: Good shotgun for newbie
Go for a Remingtion 870 of a mossberg 500.
The Remintion has all the accesories you will ever need (more than any other shot gun) to make it a gun for every season. The Mossberg has almost as many accesories and is less on the cost. I have a 500 and have found it to be shaky noisy dependable accurate and the most rugged gun I have. I wouldn't trade it for the world. |
RE: Good shotgun for newbie
see no bad post about the 500 yet i ams like paul said i amsure there are people out there that do not like them but like retak said most just are not god with the gun i now of no one who has had one use it currectly and for agood period of time that does not like it. unless they do not like mossberg

Hey thanks for the info. Now I can tell the wife what to get me for x-mas! Happy hunting everyone.

RE: Good shotgun for newbie
I have to vote for the Mossberg 500 as well. Never owned an 870 but my brother does and he loves it. With Hornady SSTs and my Mossberg 500 you can shoot out to 200 yards. On the box they actually zero it at 150.
|
RE: Good shotgun for newbie
Have you actually shot it at 200 yards, or are you just going by the ballistics and what the box says. I have not talked to many poeple that get any where near the accuracy at those distances you would need to hunt, let alone sight one in.
If yours does indeed shoot that well me and others would be happy to hear it. Paul |

Last fall I purchased a Remington 870 Express Magnum combo from Gander Mountain. Package included a 28” smooth bore barrel and a 23” rifled barrel with a cantilever scope mount. I mounted a Nikon Pro-Staff 2-7x 32mm shotgun scope on the slug barrel. I have been extremely happy with the whole package included scope. Shoots2 3/4" - 3 1/2"inch shells. Slug barrel is very accurate. I shot this doe through the heart at 110 yards with a Hornady SST. See attached photo.

RE: Good shotgun for newbie
bigtim6656; Cost on the Rem Express Mag Combo was around $450, before a Rem $30 rebate.
Scope was $129. Remington has a rebate program going on right now. Yes, lots of blaze orange. Minnesota law requires it from the waist up. I choose to wear the full body becaues we have had some idiots in the past wonder onto our property while hunting, and I that does make me nervous. |
RE: Good shotgun for newbie
i hear you ro me if ou wear any no diff then wearing it ful body something to think about hang a cheap vest off your stand your blind also if you have a stand use a stand blind
nice deer though |
RE: Good shotgun for newbie
also newshooter the mossberg has a kit you can buy and make your 500 pmps a muzzleloader in 50 cal no tools needed
