RE: Opinions on the Marlin 30-30

ORIGINAL: Some Beach

I'm considering a Marlin 30as 30-30 w/Tasco scope. Anyone here have 1st hand experience with this rifle? Does anyone know what the market price might be (only shot a handful of rounds). I'm wanting to shoot whitetail in TX.

Thanks
Marlin lever action rifles are nice guns. Tasco scopes suck! The .30/30 is plenty of rifle for those collie-dog sized whitetails in Central Texas! ("Everything is bigger in TX-except the Central Texas deer.")

For ranges at which the .30/30 is effective, if you want the Marlin 336 rifle, I'd choose one chambered for.35 Remington instead.

I hunt in the Hill Country. Leases there usually require that you hunt from a blind. Shots rarely exceed 100 yards or so. The longest shot I've taken was about 175 yards at a 40 lb. pig. (She was quite tasty...) If you are hunting Senderos (pipeline or high-line rights of way), and likely to get longer shots, you might want to step up to a bolt action with a flatter shooting cartridge like the .243, .25-06, or .270.

I've heard this before, and .35 will make a bigger hole. On the other hand... ammo costs twice as much. I've not shot deer with .35; those I've shot with 30-30 dropped as quick or quicker than anything else I've used (30-06, .270, 7.62x54, muzzleloader, shotgun...). The .35 does... about the same???

The only real advantage to the 35 is that it is better suited for larger game at that same 150 yard range as the 30/30.
