So here is a question: is an experienced shooter but novice handgunner going to be able to tell the difference between a $1000 Springfield, a $1400 Kimber and a $1600 Les Baer?
In my opinion, no. I think that when you get up over $1000 the pistols are going to be pretty good regardless of who makes them. Granted, you may get a clunker from time to time with any of the big companies but all of the big companies will gladly stand behind their product.

I think that if you get a pistol that's in the mid range as far as price is concerned I think you'll be satisfied.

I am sure you could tell some differences but the $1000 gun may be the best shooter for you.

I would like to shoot before I buy but I'm not sure if that will be possible.

I also found Les Baer 1911s, albeit at a premium price. So here is a question: is an experienced shooter but novice handgunner going to be able to tell the difference between a $1000 Springfield, a $1400 Kimber and a $1600 Les Baer?

If you're gonna spend $1K on a 1911, you'll get a good 1911 no matter the make.

Think of it more spec wise. For me, I want:
No keylock(Springfield can be removed fairly easy)
internal extractor
series 70 type safety
fixed sights
good trigger
as little MIM as possible

I matched those to my budget and wound up with 2 Springfields which I have mildly customized.

If you have a $1600 les Baer or a $2000 Ed Brown, I'll gladly trade my Springfield for it. If you have a custom Valtro by Jardine, I'll throw in a Kimber in the trade as well:D
