Buying Mossberg ATR 100 need advice

Hi everyone,
I'm going to get a Mossberg ATR100 from Wally World, they're selling them for under $250.

Question: what is the most widely available and least expensive caliber? It's my 1st rifle and I'm really wanting to use it for deer hunting in Texas. I'm not too worried about recoil. I don't want to spend a small fortune every time I want to go to the range or go hunting.

Any suggestions are really appreciated

The ATR is an inexpensive rifle and a great shooter I have a friend who has one and loves it, plus you can't beat the price. Your best bet on caliber for deer hunting will be the .243, .270, and the 30-06. I would go with the latter two for more diversity on game larger then deer. Probably the 30-06. These are some of the most popular calibers out there and ammo is plentiful and affordable.

.270 would be my choice. The kick of the 30-06 in a synthetic stock is more than I care to enjoy.

I stopped by Walmart earlier this evening to take a peek at the Mossberg they're selling. Felt good to me, but what do I know?:D

They guy told me the 30-06 and .270 ammo were around $13 a box, the .308 a couple dollars more. I could live with that pricing but when I was at Gander Mountain earlier this week I was looking at prices in the low $20's and up! I was thinking to myself, this could get really expensive!

Is the 7mm-08 any worse/better than the .270 or .308? Maybe something the wife could shoot without dislocating her shoulder then hitting me over the head with her good arm? :D

Get the 270 and shop at Wal Mart more often .

OK, so I went to Walmart tonight and saw the Mossberg ATR 100 30-06 for $249.95 in the display. Then I asked the guy to look up the .270 w/camo stock and the price was $308+. So for giggles, he looked up the same 30-06 w/black stock and it comes up as $317+. He told me the 30-06 they have in stock were 2004 leftovers and that's why the price is $249.

Anyone know what's going on with the pricing? Does this sound right?
