Are you using a rifled barrel with sabot slugs or a smooth bore barrel with foster sligs?

A slug gun with a rifled barrel shooting sabot slugs (that the barrel likes) can be very accurate at 100 yards. Some shoot 2 to 3 inch groups at 100 yards. Some slug guns with rifled choke tubes shoot pretty good as well.

New York posted up some pertinent questions. And he's right, a rifled barrel with sabot slugs is right at home at 100 yards, and certain guns can even get it done out to 200 yards.

Now a smooth bore with rifle slugs... with a scope, or at the very least rifled sights, 100 yards is about it for you. It takes a steady hand, and a decent set up. With just a bead, 75 is about all you can realistically expect. The gun is of course capable of killing at ranges MUCH in excess of that, but most guns are not able to shoot accurately enough for ethical results.

Sure it can. My first (and only) slug shotgun was the original typeIthaca Deerslayer. It was a 12-ga. smoothbore with the bore cut smaller so that the then-standard diameter (0.690") 12-ga. slugs being made in this country were a tight sliding fit in the bore. You might say it had a "13-ga." bore. With the Remington Foster-type 1-oz slugs which it really liked, that gun would shoot 3" groups at 100 yards. I had a 2.5X scope on it, and I never actually got to shoot it at a deer that far away. But if I had gotten such a shot, that gunwould have done the job.

To see if yours will, you need to try it. I assume you have sighting equipment on the gun which can let you shoot that far?? Get several brands of slugs, and test them until you find a load the gun likes. They will all shoot somewhat differently!

RE: slug question

I have a new rifled slug barrel with a bushnell sportmans 3X9. Now, here is the hard part witch slug does my gun like the best. Part 2 of this what is a rifled slug, sabot, barns, tiped barns, ect. . What slug should I shoot ? It kills me to spend $20 for five shots ,but wal-mart has 15 for $8. Can I sight in with "cheepes" and fine tune it with better ones?

RE: slug question

well if you plan to shoot sabots and sight in with rifled slugs, ur just gonna have to resight in anyways, the trajectory, and velocity is much different from the two.
