I am looking into buying a rifle. An friend of mine is a fan of the Remington 700, 7 mm. He has been hunting for about 20 years. My question is. What is the difference when talking about cartridges and chambers when it applies to 7mm magnum, .243 Winchester, 30-06, .270 Winchester, etc.....This won't be my last gun I will purchase. I just started hunting this year and I am hooked. I plan on broading my horizons in the years to come (elk and other big game). Right not I am in TN hunting white tail. Being in the military for 17 years I have experience with rifles .308 (bolt and semi-automatic) and 300 WINMAG. I just have got down into the weeds on ballistics but more on tactics. Any input?

This is the rifle I am looking at. It comes with the 3-9 remington scope right off the shelf. I am more partial to Leupold only because that is all I have used. Now this comes in .243 Win, .270 Win, 7mm-08, 7mm Rem-Mag, 30-06 Springfield, 300 Win Mag, .308 Win. Judging from some the input on the site, I am considering the 7mm-08, .243 or .270 Win. If I ever eventually go for bigger game I will just upgrade in a different caliber. Not on a tight budget but just want a good solid gun that will last and is of good quality.

Make life simple for yourself and get the 7mm rem mag. Its not tobig for whitetail and its not to small for any north american game. So it is a do it all gun and its a very flat shooting caliber for those long distance shots. Really hard to go wrong with the 7mm rem mag.

the .270 is arguably the most popular cartidge and for good reason.

270 or 243 for sure. Get the 700 instead of the 770. Im not saying the 770 is a bad rifle but its a first model year compared to something rock solid.

What you listed are different cartridges that use different dia. bullets. If you would see them , you would know write away and the chamber is the area of the barrel that holds the cartridge...

I too would go with a 700 over a 770...I don't trust anything that comes in a package deal.

I hunted for 30 years with a Remington 700 in .308 and can not tell you the number of deer that have dropped in their tracksafter one shot...Great caliber and great gun...Recently Idecided togo with something with a little more "get up and go"so I bought a Tikka T3 in .270wsm and am very pleased with this rifle...it has the smoothest bolt out of any gun I tried at the store (which was every make)and the accuracy is second to none...and the price on these rifles isexcellent for the quality.

Hey, just a heads up, but there's two Rem. 700's in the classifieds right now. One is in 30/06 and the other is in .270. FWIW, both of those rounds will take down any animal in North America. Might be what you're looking for.
For the record, I'm not selling either of those pieces or know either of the sellers. I just happened to see this post and then I went to the classifieds looking around I remembered what you were looking for.

Also, both of these rounds are very versatile as far as taking game is concerned. The 30/06 even more-so. They're both long actions and if you wanted to change calibers down the road somewhere you'd be able to simply have another barrel put on the action or have the chamber reamed for a bigger round. I'm sure you know an armorer that would be able to do this. Simp

I agree that the 7mm Rem. Mag. is a good, do-it-all caliber.So is the .30/'06 and the .270. But I recommend saving up your money (if you have to) and get a Tikka, Savage, Ruger 77, or Remington 700 instead of that 770! 770's are inexpensive, but there's a reason for that! If you look on the gun auction sites, you can probably find a better dealon a better rifle, new or used.

I always recommend Savage to everybody that asks me about rifles. There is a reason so many competitive shooters shoot savage rifles. They are considered by many to be the most accurate rifle you can buy. 7mm Rem Mag will do it all and do it all good. Thats why I always suggest that caliber to anybody that asks. So in other words find a Savage 7mm Rem Mag and go kill anything you want in north america.
