270 or 308?
which would be a better choice for whitetail deer I already own a 7mm ultra mag and a 30/06 just want to get a new toy for the collection

RE: 270 or 308?
The .308 and the .30-06 are very similar in their performance on game. The .270 Win is an outstanding cartridge for long range shooting, but not as good as your Big 7.
I'd get a .260 Rem. Kind of a cross between the .308 and the .270 ballistically, so to speak. Doesn't kick much, either. Good Dogwork and Good Hunting |
RE: 270 or 308?
Man, there sure have been a lot of these kind of posts the last few days. They all seem to head down the same path - Ford vs Chevy recommmendations, then the threads kind of die out for a while, only to start again a few weeks later.
Given that you've already accepted that you want another long gun just because, why focus on the same range as what you already have? Why not a small gun for varmint hunting/target practice, or a really big one for the really big game? Other than that, if its the 270 or the 308, flip a coin. Neither will do anything that the one's you already have don't do. |
RE: 270 or 308?
308 has more options

RE: 270 or 308?
Either one will work equally as well. Based upon what you currently own, I'd go with a short action, short barreled, light weight .308.

RE: 270 or 308?
i have owned both. i perfer the 308win over the 270win

RE: 270 or 308?
I also prefer the 308 over the 270. If you want a toy how about a 7-08?

RE: 270 or 308?
Ive taken several Whitetails using a 270.Both are excellent deer cartridges.Either you choose would be a good choice.

RE: 270 or 308?
my dad has killed deer with both and disliked the 270 very much..i know a few guys that love them to death and some here do too...but some hate the 270 and i never heard anything bad about the 308 and ive killed a deer with it..i agree it has more options and its a great little 30 caliber..i agree though the 3006 is the 308s big brother and really only has a little bit mor umph unless you hand load than you get close to a 300 win mag if you know your stuff...i cant make your desicion but id look for something a little diffrent......but if you wnat the 308s the way id go...

RE: 270 or 308?
Hard to pick between the 2. either is a fine choice. .270 is a beter longe range shooter for flatness, but either can do pretty much what the other will do in a practical sense. The numbers will lean toward the .270 for range and flatness, but a bit of an arc on your shot is not necessarily an obstacle. Suit yourself.

RE: 270 or 308?
I think you have whitetail medicine covered very well. You already own a .30 caliber, so I would go with the 270 Win. Good luck.

RE: 270 or 308?
I have owned both 308 win and 270 win. I got rid of my 308 and bought 270 win.Flatter shooting.I still own 270 win and wouldn't part with it. You don't need a 308win you got a 30-06 ,which is better.

RE: 270 or 308?
There is not enough difference between the .270 and the .308 to squabble about. In fact you can throw the .280 and 30.06 in there too! They are all pretty close ballistically. With what you already have, you would need to go smaller, (.22/250 .243, 25.06, or .260) or larger, (.300 or .338) to make a difference.
I have not mentioned the 7MM/08, it could just be the best whitetail caliber around! It would fall in with the .270, and .308 bunch, but with less recoil! For a real diference in your collection, a .35 Whelen or 45/70 would be nice! Good luck! |
