Remington 597 Magnum?

Hey guys, I was just wondering if the Remington 597 Magnums were any good. I've been tossing around the idea of buying myself one. I haven't really decided on which one to get yet, can't decide between the good ol 22 magnum or the 17HMR.

I'd like to hear any good, bad, or other information on this gun.

I had a 597 in .22LR. I loved shooting it.

I HATED cleaning it. It has two rails with springs on it. The quickest I was able to reassemble it was about 45 minutes. You have to get the springs just right on the rails without shifting the position of the bolt. It's harder than it sounds. You will fail at least a dozen times per reassembly. It will take your fingernails off. It will bend them backwards.

I now own a Ruger 10/22. I won't be going back to the Remington.

I bought a 597M (22 Win mag.) several years ago, and it's been a very reliable and accurare rifle... I have a straight 7.5x Leupold on it, and i use it to shoot pest around my place... I'd buy another in a heartbeat...

I have heard a lot of bad things about them like the magazine popping out when in fire. I have also heard a lot of good things about them. My buddy has one in a .17HMR. That thing shoots real good, I really like it, and he has had no problems thus far after owning for over a year. I want one in HMR, and .22 MAG.

I have one in .22 LR. Its a fun gun to shoot and toss rounds down range while the big guns are cooling down. It is a royal pain to clean, which is why I never do clean the gun. That being said, the gun still functions reliably even with all the lead built up. I like mine:)

I never took my dads 22 apart to clean it. We just sprayed it down with gun scrubber to clean it every 1000 or so rounds. Then sprayed some wd-40 to lube everything. It has worked great for years. He got it when he was 12 and he is now 46. I couldnt count how many rounds have been shot through it and never properly cleaned.

I've got a 597 1n 17HMR and it shoots great. I've heard of some issues on the 22's but don't know much about them. There is a lot of information on them at rimfirecentral.com
