Default New Cartrige?

I am already thinking about the cartrige I want to get in my next deer rifle. I want something bigger than my .270's. I would like to get something different that not many people have. I was thinking about a .270 WSM, but have no clue what is the range of grains you can shoot, and how much more powerfull it is compared to other cartriges. How does it compare to the .270 WIN, and 7 MAG? .300 MAG?

THANKS CHRIS

In my opinion its not that much different than the .270. I think the whole WSM line is just a marketing strategy. Its hard to beat an .06!!! Again thats just my opinion.

I just recenty got a 300 WSM and love it. The WSM's are made as short action cartridges made to mimick the performance of its full length brother. The 300 Win Mag and the 300 WSM are the same and the 270 Win and the 270 WSM are the same. Its hard to beat a 30-06 like LW said but if you want something not many other people have then i would suggest a 300 WSM. I jsut got one and love it.

Whoa there....they are not the same! The 270 wsm out performs the 270 in every aspect. The differences arent as great with the 300s.Take a look at some ballistics with the same bullet, the Remington site has a nice comparison feature.

I think that he meant that the bullet grains were the same not the ballistics. The 270 and the 270 wsm both use a .277 bullet.

The 270 wsm is ballistically superior to the 270 yes. Don't get your panties in a bunch. just joking.

I would go with a 25-06.

are you looking for a type of performance or just something different? How about looking at the 338-06. just re-barrelled and old action into one a love it.

Lubricious,
I know they are a little better but they are still close. What i was saying is they are so similar it wouldbe useless owning both 270 Win and 270 WSM. THey are not different like a 270 Win and a 30-06 is how i was stating it.

Without trying to sound like an ass, it really depends on what your idea of bigger is.
Just a couple of suggestions that "not everyone has", a 35 Whelen, 338 Federal or even a 338-06. You might want to check out the 270 WBY also but I'm not a big Weatherby fan.
Bottom line is that its hard to beat a 270 Winfor whitetail hunting.

I want something bigger than my .270's. I would like to get something different that not many people have. I was thinking about a .270 WSM,
.270 is a .270. becasue of that, they'd both utilize the same bullet weights. Simply changing the case length is all the WSM does.
I do have to applaud you on wanting somthing different. That's my rules of thumb as well. However, be prepared to reload as these odd cartridges aren't always readily accessable at shops.
My latest "different" chambering is .405 Ruger #1. [8D] Were I to simply want something different yet larger calaiber than .270, I'd opt for a .300 H&H, a .300 Savage, or a .35 Whelen.

I would choose the 300WSM. Great round, slightly better than a 300WM, but if you want a lighter, mountain gun the WSM is the way to go. In choosing a H&H, Whelen or Savage, your bullet selection is limited and in some cases may be real expensive. If you go to Federals web site, they have a great ballistics program that you can look at all the rounds. www.federalpremium.com
