More round than gun question, 264 Win Mag
Looking for a new gun and I love Remington rifles, so I was looking at Remingtons website andthe 700 SF CDL Stainless in 264 Win Mag catches my eye. Has anybody fired a 264 Win Mag, what is the recoil like? This gun really has my attention, it's purdy and I love guns that look great. Now I just need to know a little more about the round other than it seems to have great ballistics.

The .264 mag is a excellent cartridge and perhaps on a very short list for contender of best antelope rifles, however it's very endangered and overshadowed by better cartridges for allround use. Unless you intend to reload for it,expect ammo hard to find and expensive.

It is a 6.5 with a lot of powder behind it. Use a good bullet in a 6.5 and you can reasonably expect good results. Been around fer a long time. The Swedes took polar bears with their military version! Wouldn't be my first choice for that size beast, but I would not whiz my jeans using it, either.

I wish they would make one of those CDL's in 270 Roy... 264 is a great round it's problem was Remington introduced the 7mm Rem mag around the same time and I guess you know who won out.

I have a .264 and I think the world of it. Recoil is less than a 30-06, and as stated above, it's a handloader's cartridge to wring the most out of it. I'd love to have one of those .264 CDL SF's, but I can't bring myself to part with nearly $900 for one.

However, as far as recoil went, it was pretty mild, not much different than a .270 WIN. with 150 grain bullets. The factory stuff was loaded with 140-grain bullets, at a supposed MV of 3200 FPS. We didn't have a chrono available in those days, so never knew about MV. But later, it turned out that with the 140-grain factory ammo, most rifles gave closer to 3000 than 3200....
The .264 is a GREAT long-range deer and antelope rifle. It would also do for larger game with a 160-grain bullet at 2800 FPS. If I were going to shoot whitetails with it, I'd also use the 160grain bullet so there'd be more meat left to eat!
Although both the .264 Win. and the small 6.5's like the 6.5X55, etc., shoot bulllets of the same diameter, that is where the resemblance ends! The .264 is beyond comparison to the little fellows, and it eats barrels for lunch!
