Muzzle porting
 

My dad is up in years and is looking to get some porting done on his .338 win..
The rifle is a Browning SS with a 26" barrel so he wants to get it ported so not to add length to the barrel. Who else does this besides manaport? ..thanks

To the best of my knowledge, the Magna-Port treatment aids in reducing muzzle climb, but it is not much for the reduction of recoil. IF recoil reduction is what you seek, you probably will need a muzzle brake of some sort. I have a VAIS on a .416 Rigby, and with the brake in place, recoil is no worse than that of a.375 H&H. The brakes are effective, and somewhat less noisy than others. Vais makes one that is the same diameter as the barrel at the muzzle. Even if you had to chop 2" off the muzzle to keep the barrel the same length after the brake is installed, it would NOT lose enough MV to be concerned with.

I have never heard a magnaported rifle, I have 2 rifles that are ported, a 450 marlin and a 375 H&H which are both very loud. The 375 was ported by a local smith and I am not sure it did much but make it louder. The 450 came ported so I can't tell if it helped recoil but it is about the same as my hopped up 45/70 loads.
Dad is trying not to add to the barrel length, It seems all holland or others and about 2 inches..

I had E Arthur Brown www.eabco.comput a muzzle brake on my Savage. Professional job and reasonable.

Magnaporting is not round holes. The holes are oval and cut at angles to the bore. If you cut them straight it will cause stress cracks in the barrel, barrel fatigue and eventual barrel failure.

The right answer is to go out and BUY your dad a suitable rifle in a smaller caliber such as .270 Winchester or 30 / 06 Govt.

My .338 was magnaported in the early 80's and the were 4 slots, two at 45 degrees and two behind that at 180 degrees.These were that quietest and most effective brakes tested.Mine was like shooting a 30-06 with 220gr slugs....................maybe the new style has holes but this didn't...Harold
