slug gun question
i sighted in my new H&R 20 ga. tracker 2 sunday, and it is zeroed at 50 yards. now i looked at the box of the hornady sst's that i am shooting it, says that it should be 2.5 inches high, will that through me off with these trajectories or will the 100 and 150 and 200 be 2.5 inches less?
Trajectory (inches) Muzzle 50 yd 100 yd 150 yd 200 yd -1.5 2.5 3.3 0.0 -8.2 |
RE: slug gun question
If i understand the question, (which would be easier if there was some punctuation between sentences) i think your gun will shoot low. But not necessarily 2 1/2" low.If you go with a 50 yard zero, you should check the drop at longer ranges.

RE: slug gun question
ok fixed the punctuations, al right i will try them at longer distances.

RE: slug gun question
Never go by the box, always try them yourshelf so you know where they will hit and your comfort zone to make a good shot.
|
RE: slug gun question
+1 for sinocs, the ballistics on the box are based on a test gun which usually has a longer barrel than most hunting guns. You have to find out for yourself where your gun shoots.

RE: slug gun question
ok i never knew that the gun they tested had a longer barrel, ok i will try them the next time i get a chance at longer distances.

RE: slug gun question
First look at what your average shot is going to be and zero to that distance. I'm assuming you've done this and that is why you sighted in at 50yds. Next I would do what the other guys in here have said and see what you gun does with these slugs at 25,75,100, 125,150, and 200yds. Personally, I'd have trouble justifying an ethical shot out past 125 with a 20 gauge but your little gun may shoot good groups out past that. The only way to know is to try em at the range and see what ya come up with.

RE: slug gun question
why do you call it a little gun? andno i have never done this that is why i ask;)
|
RE: slug gun question
didn't mean to offend you by saying "little gun". I still stand by what I suggested earlier
|
RE: slug gun question
thats ok i understand, i was just curious why ya said it.

RE: slug gun question
Alright let's look at the trajectory chart Hornady provides for the 20 SST ..........
20 Gauge 250 gr. SST Slug 86232 Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs) Muzzle 50 yd 100 yd 150 yd 200 yd 1800/1798 1628/1471 1470/1200 1331/983 1212/815 Trajectory (inches) Muzzle 50 yd 100 yd 150 yd 200 yd -1.5 2.5 3.3 0.0 -8.2 If you are sighted in dead on at 50 yards, ignore the -1.5" muzzle number - just forget it. All that you need to know is that at 100 yards your point of impact (POI) should be .8" higher (call it1" to simplify it). At 150 yards the POI should be 2.5" low. And at 200 yards the POI should be 10.7" low. IMO, according to this trajectory anything at 100 yards to 125 yardsis a point and aim deal and all the blame of a miss or bad shot placement is on you. But the drop numbers over 150, when figured in with windreally stretch the odds of guaranteed lethal shots not to mention the energy falling off so quickly past 100 yards. |
RE: slug gun question
thanks for all the input guys.
