HELP!
 

Need some assistance in sightingin my new gun. I just bought a used Savage Model 111 in .270 Win, it has a Simmons 3-9 40 packaged scope the gun came with. My max shooting range is about 150 yards MAX, and about 80 yards average. What should I sight it in dead on at? Also what grain bullet? and what kind of bullet? I think i want to shoot ballistic tips 140 grain, so should I sight it in with those? Are there any good web sites out there for sighting in, and ballistics?

1 st... Yes, sight in with whatever ammo you will hunt with. Rem. ballistic tip ammo is fine.

If you have a area where you can sight in at 100 yards, then use it. Shoot at 25 yards to make sure it is bore sighted to paper.... If it is , then go back to 100 yards and sight dead on to 1 " high at 100. If you have a 150 yards max, that set up will do everything you need it to do sighted this way.

If the gun is not printing good on paper at 25 yards, then use a couple of shots to get it there, and then move back to 100. It doesn't have to be perfect at 25 yards, it just has to be close enough that when you shoot it at 100 yards, You will be able to see the target impact and make the necessary scope elevation and windage adjustments to get it where you need it.

And the reason sighting at 100 yards is better, is because it will allow that distance to open up the shots showing your personal shooting ticks , pulls, and flinches, and sight in your gun allowing for them. If you shoot it only at 25 yards , then you shoot at a deer 150 yards out, I can promise you there will be a difference. At 25 yards you can almost shoot the gun with open sights and do as well. The distance is not great enough to allow much error. The greater the distance , the more your shooting form errors shows up.

Yes it is good to sight them in for 1" high at 100. What we do is shoot one shot at 100 and then with the gun on a rest move it until the crosshairs line up with the hole. Then adjust the scope until the crosshairs line up with the bullseye. you have to do this without moving the gun. We can usually get them sighted in that way in less than 5 shots total.

Sight in with the bullet you will hunt with first. Sight it in 1" high at 100 yards with this you will be dead on at 50 inch high at 100 and dead on at 200, anything from 25 to 250 yards will be point and shoot. Use 140's if you want I do but find what your rifle likes best and stick to it. Just a note the 270 was designed aroundthe 130 gr. bullet.
