New Barrel or New Gun?
I have started hunting in a shotgun only zone in New York. Last year I used my muzzleloader, but would like to use a shotgun this year. Here is my question:
Should I get a cantelevered rifled barrel for my Rem 870 (which is also my turkey gun) or look at a totally new gun? The barrel is in the $225 range. I know I have seem 870 Express and Mossberg "Deer Slayer" shotguns under $300. Any experience with accuracy on either scenario? Thanks, Rob |

I'd go with a new barrel,if nothing is wrong with your 870 you already own. Zeak

RE: New Barrel or New Gun?
my answeris a two part answer,
1 I would say get which ever you coul get cheaper! which leads me to 2. if you save enough money then maybe buy a rifle and hunt in another area where rifles are legal. i live in a shotgun only county in Pa and hunt other places. no doubt i like hunting shotguns but i'm not sure that you can beat the excitement of a rifle. and possibly you might not need a new barrel with the different ammo. avaiable. just something to consider. god bless america!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
RE: New Barrel or New Gun?
Thanks. The area which is shotgun only has some awesome bucks, which is why I want to hunt there. I already have several rifles. I guess I am more concerned with accuracy than cost.

RE: New Barrel or New Gun?
..I don't know how the accuracy is on the rifled Mossbergs.. but, if it was my decision, I'd probably go with a whole new shotgun, for about the same amount of money. You said money wasn't an issue, so, from what I've heard, the Hastings barrels are supposed to be premium barrels... I would probably get one of those for my Remington. I think you would be assured of an accurate shotgun.
My shotgun is a Mossberg, and I'm about to get another in 20ga for my daughter, so it should be evident I like them... but I just don't know about the accuracy of their rifled barrels. If I knew they were adequately accurate, I'd buy the whole new gun in a heartbeat, and not have to worry about taking the guns apart everytime I wanted to shoot clay pigeons, or deer. RE: New Barrel or New Gun?
check out the mossberg maverik its a rifled baller slug gun pupm action with ajustable rifle sights it holds 6 shells and if you want to mount a scope on it (if your local gun smith is like mine) it will only cost 35 dollars more... oh yea the gun is $225 so for 300 you can have a nice slug gun...only 100 more than a rifled barrel

RE: New Barrel or New Gun?
I would go with a new shotgun myself . I have guns I hunt with and guns I shoot trap with and one shotgun would do it all ,but the wife don't know that .

RE: New Barrel or New Gun?
Why not try your 870 to see what it will do with a slug, maybe you won't need a new barrel or gun.
