Does is work?

There's a favorable article on Chuck Hawk's website. http://www.chuckhawks.com/affordable_accuracy.htm

Well, I ruined a gun doing it.

I highly recommend you do it properly by hand lapping, and concentrating on rough spots.

Exactly what bigcountry said. With "firelapping" you have NO control or feel in the rough spots or burrs. I have seen a bunch of barrels ruined due to improperly using firelapping kit. To me,firelapping is for lazy people who don't want to take the time to do it by hand.

What do you guys recommend for a lapping compound?

Brownells sells some. I have used 800gr but use a mop, not a cast slug. I am sure I am not doing much, but really scared to use 600grit.

Bigcountry,it's ok to start out (and preferable) with 600 lapping compound then finish with their #800 after you can't feel burrs (rough/tight spots). As to mop-as long as it's a tight, uniform fit,np.
